unexpectedly landed my "dream job". It's for something I've been a fan of for a while and very specific and is a kind of once in a lifetime random job opportunity. Here's the catch. It's freelance, I have a full time job already and there wasn't supposed to be any pay. After a call with my new boss, she suggested that because of my experience, we should discuss a pay rate today. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO EVEN ASK FOR. And google is not helping because they don't take into consideration that this is honestly something I'm so thrilled to work on that I would do it for free. My friend has a background in visual art (mainly years of oils, watercolors, some crafts) and has recently started exploring graphic design. So far she's done some projects for friends and family (website design, logos, packaging, card designing, etc). She'd love to do more of this kind of work on a freelance basis, but isn't sure how to find it. Should she advertise on Fiverr, or Elance, or...? How does this work and how do you get started as a freelance graphic designer? Any tips or recommendations would be really appreciated!
I'm doing the ground work in setting up a small side business. This business would target a specific demographic with a defined subset of residential design services. I feel compelled to do a 'rate card' but I wonder if anyone here has experience with using a rate card as a service provider. Trying to figure out pros and cons and whether I've missed something. As a consumer, I think I'd love to see some up-front rates but I know that, realistically, it would keep me from hiring someone if I felt like I couldn't afford them (even if I could). [more inside]
Hi all, I have a quick ask for a graphic designer. Need to mock up a landing page - does not need to be final design, and with about 24 hour turnaround. Don't want to spend a ton of money - up to $100. Are there any places I can go to ask / designers willing to help out? I would ask designers at my job, but this landing page is for a personal project and they are extremely busy already.
Graphic designers who work exclusively as freelancers might or might not reach a point where they want to get full-time jobs, perhaps because it gives them a chance to save up more, or maybe because it offers them a stable paycheck when freelance work is sporadic. Question is, when freelance graphic designers apply for a design job in a creative agency, how do they write a compelling resume? [more inside]
I run a freelance design business and I've been working with a small, 3-person finance company on their logo. I delivered the last contracted round of revisions yesterday and the client has more changes, but rather than paying for a few more hours, they are requesting to make changes on their end, even though they are not designers or even in a creative field. How to manage this stickiness? [more inside]
Usually designers and (to a greater degree, artists) are represented by agents who take care of all the administrative/legislative issues. However, for those who manage their own freelance businesses, it is imperative that they have their own business documents (project questionnaires, proposals, quotations, contracts, invoices, ..). I am interested in mapping out all the needed documents in the process of a project, from the moment the client contacts the designer/artist to the moment the project is submitted and the payments are made. Where can I find some comprehensive/reliable resources for such documents?
I went on a long, long break form my creative career cause I was feeling burnt out due to some failures and now I can't seem to get back into it, possibly because I no longer have a financial incentive to do so. How can I fix this? Warning: Long, super privileged person problems. [more inside]

Freelancer filter: I'm a graphic designer / creative consultant. I've been at it for 15 years. I like the freedom, but have never been particularly good at invoicing etc. I have a client wanting to work out some sort of "retainer" situation but, frankly, I'm not even sure what this could be like, how it would be structured, and why it would be better for me than my current status. I'm all for regular paychecks... So there's one. Anyone have experience with similar arrangements?

I am planning to leave my current job in about a year, and hope to be able to make some money (I don't need a lot) by doing freelance web development/programming. While I have a bit of experience with programming and very basic web design ((X)HTML/CSS), this would pretty much be a new field for me. I guess I'm wondering - is this a realistic goal? And if so, what steps should I take to help me get there? [more inside]

I've been asked to design a t-shirt for a well-known band on a major label, but I don't know what the going rate is for the work. I saw this question, but I'm not fresh out of school, and that's a question about bulk work, which this will not be. I'm open to charging a flat-rate or my hourly, but am unclear which is appropriate in this situation. [more inside]
