Have you read or can you point me to any interesting articles about what will be the future of media like films/software/books given the way they are all being distributed online via torrent sites & the like. Will copyright go away or what? I am looking for INTERESTING theoretical speculations, not some person just saying the letter of the current law will be enforced or the usual doomsday-talk.

Firefox seems like the odd man out, being a GUI application that is not just open-source but also compiles and runs on Windows, Mac OS and Linux -- consistently and equally well. What other GUI-based applications that are like this; being open-source and that support all three platforms natively?

sometime in the last week or so, there was a thread on the blue that (i seem to recall) had something to do with growing vegetables... or horticulture... or something. and in the comments i'm nearly sure i saw a link to some sort of software that would let you mess with the pH levels in your soil, lighting levels, etc... like a "sim-'growing things'" kind of software.

I'm looking for some (free) software that will let me set up a "document dropbox" on my web server. Basically I want to upload files and then have them be available -- through a nice-looking interface -- to users of my choosing. Searching Google and Sourceforge hasn't found me anything useful yet, although
bytehoard is about 25% of the way there.

What's the best (free, easy to install, doesn't hog resources) emai list software for OS X?
I've been running Macjordomo, but it is buggy and hogs resources, slowing down my machine. I manage about 10 local lists, with not more than 20 members of each list.
I thank you, MeFi gestalt...
