I received a piece of technology I didn't pay for!

I pre-ordered a smartphone on announcement day back in March. Shortly after, I decided this particular smartphone wasn't going to be for me, and I cancelled my order and was promptly refunded. The phone just now became available and problem is, I received the phone on Monday. [more inside]

Help me ID/find this game: a portal-like with bouncing ball

Help me ID/find this game: it may have been playable in-browser. If downloadable, it was free and probably worked on winxp. It might have only been at a demo/tech demo state, but it was a 3d first person puzzler where you aim and it would show you the trajectory of where a ball would bounce and you could then teleport to the end point of the trajectory? The idea was that you'd have to figure out which surface/angle to bounce off in order to get to a goal destination. May even have been posted to mefi. [more inside]

Fast food/QSR-filter: Who typically gets their meal comped? And why?

I am trying to compile a list of who typically can expect to receive a free meal at fast food, casual dining, or quick service restaurants. One example would be uniformed police officers. I'd like to hear from people who worked in such places or know about these things. [more inside]

A microwavable Thanksgiving

My son and I are both gluten-free and incredibly sensitive to cross-contamination. We are going to a big family thanksgiving where the food will not be GF and cross-contamination will ruin the food that normally is. (a serving spoon being shared between dishes or someone dropping bread crumbs on an open dish would leave me very sick). I would like to bring dishes so my son and I can enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal. I don't mind spending this whole weekend cooking and freezing so he has a nice Thanksgiving. The only problem is that everything we bring has to be microwavable... So help me MFites. What are your favorite Thanksgiving recipes that would hold up well to being warmed up from frozen in a microwave. (Don't worry about the recipe being gluten-free -- I'm pretty good at converting recipes).

What sort of soccer play was this?

Awhile back I saw a soccer match where there was a play something like a penalty kick, something like a free kick, but not either of those exactly. I'm pretty sure it was taken within the penalty box, but not at the usual spot. The announcers were talking about how rare it was and how many teams don't practice for it. Anyone know what this could have been?

is something very wrong here ???

I have an ex who seems to be be depressed and has sent me a few emails telling me that we are all programmed by the "Source" that free will does not exist, that nothing depends on us etc and that the "Source" has decided that he would always be unhappy in love ! And that if the "Source" has decided that he would be unhappy, unaccomplished, alone then he must be happy with that decision. (He's 55, pianist/composer, not well known, gets by with the financial help of his parents., never been able to commit or live with a woman. His father is bi-polar, been hospitalised a few times for that). This is contrary to my world view, which I told him but I'm rather worried about where his mind is going. Any thoughts, help much appreciated

How is it possible that so many smart phone apps are for free?

I am relatively new to the smart phone world. But what I already learned is that incredibly many apps are for free. I wonder how that is possible. During the last month I have spent some time myself developing a financial app for Android - my preferred smart phone. The app of course could be useful not only for me but also for others. So I put it into the Google Play Store. Since I made some effort with bringing the thing to life I am not ready to give it away for free but expect getting a reasonable price paid. What I wonder is are people in general expecting apps to be free anyway? Are there other models how to finance the development of smart phone apps?

I just want to put a draft website up for a client for a few days. I have created it locally in a few directories and I want to put it somewhere, preferably for free or a few quid and without signing some year-long contract. I just want to FTP my files in and have done with it. Just HTML and CSS for now. It can expire in a month and can have whatever weird URL it wants. What's the best suggestion? [more inside]

Free online graphing app that plays well with Excel?

Asking for a colleague: "Back in October 2008, I found a free online app that uploaded data from Excel and produced (very pretty) charts and graphs. Unfortunately, I didn’t keep track of the website, and I’m having trouble tracking it down again. Most of the free graphing apps I’ve found online today require that you manually input the data; I’m looking for something that will more easily upload a set of data from Excel."
