Being overcharged in an illegal sublet in a rent-controlled apartment. No lease. What do?

I've been living in a month-to-month, no-lease sublet in Manhattan since January. I just found out that' it's a NYCHA rent-controlled apartment, and i'm paying way more than my 'share' of the monthly rent (also, i'm pretty sure subletting a rent-controlled apartment is illegal.) Clearly i'm going to be moving out ASAP. What else should I do? Do I have grounds for financial recoupment? [more inside]

How to determine immigration status of ex-wife after immigration/marriage fraud?

I, a U.S. citizen, married a foreign national some time ago and helped her obtain conditional permanent resident status as a result of the marriage. I subsequently discovered that she had no intent of engaging in a legitimate marital relationship with me and, instead, had married me for the sole purpose of becoming a permanent resident of the United States. Upon this discovery, I filed for an annulment but was instead granted a divorce (details inside). My immigrant ex-wife will soon need to apply (via the I-751 process) to convert her "conditional" permanent resident status to "true" permanent resident status if she wishes to remain in the United States legally (which she does). I do not know whether she will be granted this status, but I would like to find out whether or not she does attain it. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I might find this out? [more inside]

How to prevent tax fraud occurring the third time?

It's tax time and we're having a problem again. Last year when we went to file our taxes electronically, they were rejected due to someone borrowing our daughter's social security number and using it to file taxes. We filed police reports, IRS reports and submitted our taxes by paper. The same problem is occurring this year. What can we do to fix this and prevent from occurring next year. Is there a specific number, agency or method to request help from? The IRS is closed over the weekend, so we'll be calling them this week, how should we go about doing it?

WTF is happening with my credit card?

My credit card statement shows two charges made online to Microsoft Store. The charges were reversed (credited back) two days later. The net effect on the credit card balance is zero, but I'm freaking out about it anyway. The Microsoft Store people were able to tell me that it was for a download version of Office and the email address used was wmp@commerce5.com. I don't recognize this email address. Can anyone venture a guess what's going on? There have been no other fraudulent charges on the credit card in years. And I find the fact that the charges were reversed, apparently by the person who made the charges initially, creepy beyond belief. The credit card was Discover and the charges were made on Thanksgiving Day, if it matters.

My grandmother was defrauded by a pair of con artists pretending to be me. Who can I report this crime to?

My grandmother was just defrauded by a pair of con artists who, pretending to be me, told her that I was in a car accident in Canada and needed her to wire money. She's fine, but lost a few thousand dollars. She said that she doesn't mind losing the money (she's just happy I'm safe), and doesn't want to be bothered by the police. I respect that decision, but I'm concerned that if let off the hook, the con artists in question will be able to prey on others -- they are obviously targeting elderly people. Who can I report this fraud to? (Additionally, and out of curiosity -- any thoughts on how they discovered my relationship with my grandmother?) [more inside]
