What does being a 'registered X voter" mean in the US?

Can someone explain to a non-American what being a 'registered Democrat' or 'registered Republican' voter means? Who do you register with, why would you want to and what does it mean in practice? Is it in any way connected with being registered to vote, full stop? I've been trying to work this out through context for many years, but I am defeated.

Milwaukee Brewers 1989 Significance?

I have a baseball hat that was recently given to me by my brother on his trip through Wisconsin. It is a Milwaukee Brewers Cooperstown Franchise hat which has a "1989" stamped on the back. I have no idea the significance of the 1989 year and the Brewers. I have conducted some rough Google searches, but I couldn't find anything definitive. Anyone have any info? Thanks.

Franchisees want to resist changes

Franchisee activism question: I am a franchisee of a fairly large painting/home-repair franchise network. The franchisor has put together plans for generating additional income (a new line of business) but in return wants all franchisees to sign a contract addendum that in effect cancels our current exclusive territories. Tim Hortons luddism ?

Why does one of the biggest coffee franchise across Canada will only accept cash as a payment method ? I understand that banks charge a fee per transaction but I would assume profits from sales could justify such a commodity but Tim Hortons seem the think otherwise. maybe someone could explain why such a decision is still viable in 2006.
