I'm looking for some books on European history during the 1800s. I'm specifically interested in Russia from the Decemberists to the 1917 revolution, and the French student revolution of 1848.

My fiancee and I are planning a honeymoon abroad, we're thinking of visiting Spain and/or France. Neither one of us are well spoken in the native languages... do we need to worry? What are people's experiences in this situation (just traveling abroad in general, to a place where you don't speak the language)? Is it a huge burden to bear on yourselves or on the country's native peoples?

In the UK the accepted drivers signal for ' Go ahead / I am surrendering my right of way ' is a flash or two of the headlights. In France the same signal means the opposite. How does one signal ' Go ahead / I am surrendering my right of way ' in France?

I am trying to remember the title of a French movie I saw in early 1999, although it may date from earlier than that. I don't remember the content of the main part of the movie at all other than that it had to do with amazing coincidences (or AN amazing coincidence, something like that)...

Recommendations for historical fiction about Paris? I'll be there for a couple of weeks, and have found that historical novels can really help me sink my teeth into a place. I have no particular era in mind, so the period is less important than the setting and the writing.

Looking for recommendations for a trip to Alsace, France this weekend. Currently, we're just across the border in Germany. Should we rent a car or take the train? Which towns must we see on a weekend trip? What are the best things to do (hiking, castles, etc.) and the best places to stay? Thanks!

I've recently moved to Paris, and I'd like to know if there are any pubs where I can catch NFL games on Sunday nights. I know they will start pretty late in the evening, but I just want to have a beer and watch a game. Bonus points for places that might air Jets/Giants.

I have a couple of very specific questions about our upcoming travel to Nice, France.
1. Does the Monoprix located on Avenue Jean Medecin sell groceries? And if so, would it be likely that we can find space in the nearby car park at about 6 pm on a Saturday? (We're coming directly from the States to a rural gite and will need to buy provisions for at least Sunday breakfast.)
2. Does the Monoprix at Place Garibaldi sell groceries and, if it does, is it possible to park nearby? (Both of these stores figure on our planned route out of the city. However, maps only show car parks near the one on Jean Medecin.)
3. Does traffic on Avenue Thiers, where the train station is located, run in both directions or just one way? It's not totally clear from all the maps I have consulted. If it is only one way and to the east, we'll have to greatly revise our itinerary out of town.
Thanks muchly.

Help me buy a scooter in Paris. I've just moved to Paris for work, and will be getting my carte de sejour (longterm visa) in a few weeks. I would like to find a decent second-hand Vespa or something similar. Some of the questions I have: Can I get a nice ride for under 1000€? Will I need an expensive French license (I currently hold one from NJ)? What type of insurance will I need and how much should I expect to pay? I'm looking to buy in September, so any help would be appreciated!

I want to stay in the French Riviera for a couple of weeks in August. However, much of the research I'm doing implies that it's horribly overpopulated and overdeveloped. Can you suggest a good town, island, or village in which to stay?

I'll be going to France in a little under 2 months, to stay 2 weeks with a family that doesn't speak much English at all, in a relatively small town that doesn't speak much English at all. I'm decently proficient, but not confident, and definitely lacking in the listening/speaking end. I have, however, 9 days coming up where I will have more than enough free time. I won't have an internet connection, but I'll have a laptop I can put stuff on. What is the best use of the next 2 months in terms of preparing for functioning well on the trip?

When doing that little double kiss the French do, should I go right then left, left than right, or is there some subtle clue that the French give off to let you know which direction you should be moving your head? 'Cause if you go left when she goes right, it's not office appropriate and seems to upset her...

I'm going on a six month exchange to Lyon, France, in August and I'd like to play football (soccer) while I'm over there. I can play at a reasonable level, and I'd be in open womens agewise. Ideally I'd play through university (Lumiere) or in a club with a similar group of people, but I'm having trouble finding specific club information online.

Northern Italy recommendations? When travelling across the top of Italy--south of the Alps but north of Venice--from Slovenia to France what are some of your favorite places to visit? Any must-sees? I'll be making this trip near the end of May with three other people in a car. We expect the Italy part of the trip to last a mere couple of days.
