Help me plan my trip to France!

I’m currently based in Andalucía, Spain, teaching English for the school year, and am planning to visit neighboring France during Christmas vacation. France fascinates me and will be the first country I visit outside of Spain during my time in Europe, but to be honest: I know nothing. I have approximately 13 days to spend in the country, I would like to see Paris and a few other sites in the northwest, and I will probably enter the country on the Mediterranean coast (from Spain) and leave via the Basque Country (to return to Spain). What should I see? [more inside]

From Paris to Geneva in a week - where to stop?

Where would you go in France if you had a week to get from Paris to Geneva? My husband and I (early 30s) are planning a trip and am not sure how to fill that space or where to go. We would prefer trains to renting a car, and the only restriction is that we'd like to spend a night or two in Annecy. [more inside]

Major Mistress Mystery Missed: Madame Makes Masses Manic!

An apartment she had kept locked in Paris since 1940 was finally opened and among the items found in the apartment was a gorgeous painting of her grandmother by italian artist Giovanni Boldini. Question about locales in old pictures taken in France

A friend asked me (because I have been to France a couple times) if I knew the locations in a couple of snapshots taken by his father many years ago (I presume after WWII) while in France serving in the armed forces. I have no idea, having only been to Paris and environs, and thought there was a chance that a French, or French-traveling, MeFites would know. Thanks in advance to anyone who has an idea. Can I buy health insurance as a long-stay visitor in France?

I'm an American living in France on a long-stay visitor's visa (I'm here as an artist in residence working on comics in Angoulême). To get my visa, I had to prove I had health insurance. At the time of my visa application, I had American health insurance which covered only emergencies abroad, so I assumed that if anything came up, I would pay out of pocket here in France and then, well, go home if anything really grave came about. I also bought travelers insurance from World Nomads to cover repatriation (necessary for the visa). Now, because of reasons that I wont go into here, I have lost my American health insurance and am left with only the travelers insurance, which is really not sufficient. I'd like to stay in France and am planning to renew my visa for another year, so I want to make sure everything is in order. I'd also like to be covered! Is it possible to buy French health insurance as a foreigner who is technically a "non-resident"? I've googled a bit and found some links to various companies who seem to do just this, but I would like to hear from others who have done the same or who know something about it.

Paris to Sauternes and back

I have to be in Paris for an academic conference on May 31 to June 1st. On June 2nd, there's a marathon in Sauternes, which appears to be about 6-7 hours south-west of Paris by car. My question is (1) having never been to France, and never traveled around Europe except by train and since college, can I get from Paris to Sauternes in time to run the race at 8:30am the next morning realistically? And (2) can you help me logistically plan this ahead of time so that it minimizes risk of getting lost, missing the race, and spending a lot of money? I will be flying out of Paris, fyi, and haven't booked any flights yet.
