Wide eyeglasses?

Can you help me find glasses that fit my head? I've only been able to find a fit with the widest frames available, and finding them has been a matter of trial and error, mostly the latter. My current glasses have a total width of 144 mm, and I think I may be able to go down a millimeter or two, but this is the first time in ages I haven't felt like I need to hack the temple pieces into some bizarre and unlikely shape for my glasses to fit reasonably well. I'd like to have at least one backup pair that fits similarly well.

I'm looking for somewhere I can go, whether online or in or near San Francisco, where I can see a wide range of frames with widths from 142-145 mm, and purchase them at a reasonable price. I want to be able to find frames that will fit me without needing to manually scan a bunch of them, ideally by searching by total width. (This rules out Zenni Optical, for example--I've heard great things about them, but they don't let you search by width and I really don't want to look through a few hundred sets of frames to pull out the ten that would fit me, only to conclude that I don't like any of them. I've had the same problem at the physical optical shops I've visited.)

I used to have a pair with dark green plastic frames, which looked great, so getting into something like that would be excellent. My script is fairly standard; about -4.5 in each eye, a slight astigmatism in one, distance vision only. I don't need exotic lens materials--I've had great luck with plain polycarbonate or CR39 lenses. However, I do want an AR coating.

Dorian Gray and a guest

My girlfriend and I are planning to give photos we had taken of us to our families (and some friends) for Christmas.

We have a few questions. The most important—in my mind—is frames. We need at least 4 (probably more) frames for these photos. We'd like them to be innocuous and uniform without being too generic (no crystal). We'd like to order them all from the same place. The cheaper the better (since this will not be the main present) but we're willing to spend $20 each if we have to (we won't quibble on an extra buck or two, but $10 is the actual target). The pictures are 8x10. We're hoping for answers that are more creative than "Walmart/Target have good cheap frames." We also have way too little time for the "This kit is cool." We're not making any frames.

Secondarily, should we give them all the same photo? If we decide to give each person different pictures should we provide them with access to the pool of available options and offer to swap? Would asking something like, "If you like one of these better let us know, and we'd be happy to swap yours for it. Or, if you want them all, we can order you a set at the cost of X."

Thanks.

Reference of Frames?

I need an affordable framing place in NYC/Brooklyn! I have about 10 prints I'd like framed for my wall, and many prints have somewhat unusual sizes that make it hard to find frames at various dollar stores and such. Ideally I'd like to drop off my prints at a store, discuss briefly which prints need matting and which just need regular frames, and pick them up the next week. I work just upstairs from a tony framing store in DUMBO, but if you've got a more affordable recommendation in Murray Hill or whatever, please send them my way!

Can someone recommend a reliable, reasonably priced vendor for snap frames in Vancouver or Canada? I'm looking for a company in Vancouver (BC) or Canada who sells snap frames like the ones on this site at a reasonable cost.

Any recommendations from those have experience with a vendor (through this product or any other) would be fantastic, but any tips in general are appreciated! I can also look at America if someone has preferred vendor there. (I'm sort of looking at displays2go, linked above, but not sure about their reputation and want to compare pricing, etc.)

Can javascript "listeners" working across frames?

Guerilla-coder Javascript filter: Rather than wait 12-18 months to get my project idea into my company's queue, I'm trying to find a workaround. It's going to be ugly. It's going to be messy. And I have no idea how to do it.

Bottom line: My company's web portal has a top frame that I can control, and a bottom frame controlled by Web IT. Can I add an event listener to the top frame that will watch the bottom frame and excecute when it's done loading? So, I work for a major healthcare insurance company. The project queue is 12-18 months for major stuff and 9-12 months for piddly stuff. Naturally, we make exceptions for breakfixes (and for execs who have a pet project and scream alot, of course), but even simple stuff takes forever.

As an example, I put in a request a year ago to have a simple piece of javascript loaded into the web portal; it's just getting put in, this weekend.

Believe it or not, I really do like my job. It's almost become something of a game to see how much I can do with the few parts of the webpage I can control. Anyway ...

The top frame of the web portal is fully under my control, but never refreshes. As a result, I can't use addLoadEvent() or any of my usual tricks. Is there some sort of listener that can sit in the top frame and watch the bottom frame?

I can give lots more details if needed (no, this is not me going rogue; yes, I have approval to dick around in our test environments to see if this is going to work; yes I'm really trying to do something that will benefit our users). Please keep in mind my skill level is only intermediate, so I may have to do lots of research ... but I'm more than willing to do that. I just need a direction to go.

I would like to buy the frames Robert Downey Jr. wears in "A Scanner Darkly," but I can't Google my way to them. Who makes these or a similar version?
Hanging photographs with cheesecloth.

A two part kitchenware/decorating question. Ok, the two parts have not much to do with each other. Except they are both in my house. a) how to hang large photographic prints without frames in a way that looks cool and b) I'm making a lot of yogurt these days and straining it with cheesecloth. The cheesecloth gets kind of funky after a while. What can I use instead or how can I wash it? Hope this is kosher. 2 small questions for the price of one.

a) I'm a photographer. Both at home and for shows I'd like to be able to show photographs in a way that looks good and is cheap (aka no frames). In the past I've seen prints hung from wires strung horizontally against the wall, with the prints clipped to the wires. I've also seen little pieces of metal attached to the wall and then prints attached with magnets.

My prints are generally fairly large (13x19) with a white border around the print.

Are there any examples online about how to pull this off and make it look hip and nice? Basically the cost of frames is preventing me from doing a lot of things, both at home and for shows and I think this would be a good solution.

b) I'm making a lot of yogurt these days, based on this article by Howard McGee. At the end I strain it with cheesecloth in a strainer.

The cheesecloth gets filled up with yogurt. Normally I soak it in a pot with hot water and then squeeze it out multiple times, then let it hang to dry. It gets kind of stiff and I can never get it totally clean.

I tried putting it in the washing machine and that made it bunch up and basically ruined it. Is there anything I could use instead of cheesecloth that would work as well? Coffee filters or something? Or is there a better way to clean it?

I just found out I have stigmata! Or is that astigmatism? The doctor's writing is kind of blurry.

So, apparently I need glasses. Where can this Canadian get the best deal on some designer frames? After a visit to the optometrist today, I'm shopping for glasses. I found a pair that I quite like—Armani 500s—but I'm wondering if I can get them any cheaper than the $165 CDN they're charging at the local store. I've scoured previous AskMes and been reading about shopping for glasses online, checked froogle and ebay, and have found cheaper sticker prices but after you factor in shipping and the exchange rate and (I'm assuming) duty, the deal isn't quite so good.

Where do Canadians get their designer frames? Or is there some secret way to find good quality replica frames that will be available on the discount sites that I have read about here? My concern with the online sites are that I can't try on the glasses to make sure they look okay or that the quality won't be so great. Or should I just go and try the cheap glasses they have in so many stores and try to find something to pop my prescription into?

So, I guess my question(s) boil(s) down to:

1) Are designer frames worth the price, or are they just the same as the cheap ones with somebody's famous name on them?

2) If I go for the nice Armani glasses, is there a cheaper place to get them than the store I was in? (Note also that I do not have a Costco membership)

Frame Skipping Mac

Why is the video skipping on my Mac when hooked up to seconday display? I have a Mac with 2 gigs ram and 2ghz intel processor. When I play a video on it it works fine. But when I plug my tv to it through, hdmi -> minidvi, and audio cable to the tv. It runs fine for like 10 minutes then starts skipping really bad. If i unplug and plug the hdmi, or even audio cable back in then it works again for another 10 minutes. I dont understand, anyone have any ideas? Oh and when it skips in VLC player it gives me this message.

I have four relatively large photographs I need framed. Where in new york city can I get a good deal? Two pictures are about 20x24 and the two others are a bit bigger.
Why do my black plastic frames turn white?

My glasses have black plastic frames and they turn white when wet from water or sweat, how can I get them clean? I initially thought this was from sweat because I first noticed it after going to the gym, but my bright idea of washing the glasses to get the sweat off exacerbated the problem. It basically looks like the plastic itself has turned whitish. They eventually (after a few days) turn black again, but I have no clue what makes them return to their normal color. Any suggestions to either prevent this or to clean them (as well as scientific explanations as to why this happens) would be much appreciated, thanks!

How do I mount a wrinkled print?

How do I mount somewhat wrinkled prints for framing? Or alternately, how can I smooth out a wrinkled screenprint before framing – would a water bath be a horrible idea? I have an assortment of large prints I've purchased at odd sizes. Most of them have come in mailing tubes and have a curl to them.

I am also a cheapskate when it comes to custom framing. Lately I've taken to purchasing assemble-it-yourself frames at custom lengths from an online store. Upon trying to frame the prints, they all appear buckled and do not sit flat under the mat like I want. The plexiglass does press firmly against the mat by way of some springy clips, so that's not the problem... it's more the print against the mat window and foamcore.

So, am I missing a crucial mounting step? Is there an archival spray adhesive that I should be using to affix the print to the foamcore?

Furthermore, the one print I like the best is the most wrinkled of the lot. It is a screenprint on recycled 100# cover. Would it be ill-advised to give it a water bath in the hopes of evening out the ripples, and then reframing after it has dried?

Framing suggestions for Battlestar Galactica posters. My sis got me these wonderful BSG posters. They are 22" x 17" and I would like to get them framed. However in keeping with the BSG aesthetic I would like to have the corners clipped on the frames to form an octagon like they are on the prints.

Any suggestion for an appealing DYI option, or a reasonable custom job.

Help frame me

Recommendations for an affordable mat cutter for home use? I learned how to cut mats AGES ago (like, 15-20 years ago) and haven't done it since. But now I have quite a few nice prints that I'd like to frame, a basement full of woodworking tools and glasscutting equipment, and more time than money to pay a professional for the amount of things I'd like to frame (which is a LOT of things. I've been saving them up for 5-6 years.)

The largest prints I have are 24" (though it would be cool to do something larger someday, it would be rare). Most are smaller than 18-20" on one edge.

My husband is going to get it for me for a birthday gift. I imagine that something under $200 would be in line with what we're thinking, but I'm willing to hear about a mat cutter that is more if it is really, really worth it.

Any brands or models that the art students of Mefi fancy?

How can I paint my titanium glasses frames?

Is there any way for me to paint my titanium glass frames? (And be somewhat durable and look decent.) I have a pair of titanium frames that were getting pretty scuffed up so I stripped them with some 000 steel wool. Now they look great, but they're a lot too flashy for me. I'd like to get them back to black, but everything I read tells me that nothing sticks to titanium.

Is there any hope? I'm reasonably handy in the arts and crafts area and I'm willing to go through a fair amount of effort. (Short of the replacement cost of the frames of course.)

Watch for sliding glasses...

How do I get used to these new glasses? Slightly different from the normal question - I'm well familiar with the process/length of time for adjusting to the new prescription, but now I'm having problems with the frame type.

I've been wearing glasses for nearly 20 years now, but in all this time, I've only had the frame type with nose pads.

I just got these frames from my home-town eye doctor. We only did some minor adjustments while I was there as I don't live there any more - they mailed the glasses to me when they were finished and still need some adjusting for a good fit.

I'm having some difficulty adjusting to the lack of nose pads and find myself continually pushing the glasses back up a bit on my nose - will a proper fitting and getting the ear pieces to curve more around the back (which I intend to get done this week) keep the glasses at the top of my nose where I want them or is this sort of frame just doomed to slide down down down the nose?
Important to note that by, "down down down", I mean a millimeter or three down to the top of that bump on the nose instead of tucked nicely into the dent between nose and forehead).

Headhunting Herbie Hancock's glasses

In Possiblities, among other places, Herbie Hancock wears these slightly tinted, curved glasses, which come to a bit of a point right over his nose. My question, is where can I find a pair? These are similar, but not the same, and he also wore a second set of frames in Possibilities which was entirely different. These frames are similar, but not the same, for a further idea.

Sorry for yet another "I want famous person X's glasses/sunglasses" thread, but not sorry enough to not make it. I really wish I could find a more helpful photo, but I can't, anywhere I've looked. Help me out, MeFi! :D

Where should I start with the Frames?

Where to start with The Frames? Even though they've been recommended by countless Irish friends, after seeing the film Once, I want to get into The Frames. Where shall I begin? Live recordings? A particular album? (BTW, Once was great.)

Is this a good deal for a frame and print?

Is this a good deal for a frame & print? I would like to have this photo framed and printed. Flickr's partnered up with ImageKind and they seem to offer pretty good deals... ...as framing seems to be universally ridiculous.

Here's the pricing breakdown for the options I selected:

Finished size: 33.3" x 25.3"
Print on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308: 24.0" x 16.0" $31.99
Frame: Gallery Black, 1.63" width, ID: 601 $42.85
Top Mat: Matte White, ID: 1058, Width: 2.5", conservation $17.08
Middle Mat: Jet Black, ID: 1001, conservation $17.08
Bottom Mat: Matte White, ID: 1058, conservation $17.08
Glazing: Non-glare Acrylic, ID: 5 $44.80
Fitting and assembly $21.08

My Total: $191.96

So I'm looking at about $205 out the door, once it's shipped.

The other places I've looked at briefly don't have as nice of tools and seem to charge even more... I'm not really looking to roll my own, so is this about as good as I'll find?

Also, is there anything else I should consider with this? I'm alternating Matte White, Jet Black, Matte White for a three-matte option, because I think they're neutral and draw the eye to the piece, but criticism is welcome.

Also, I touched this up from this original... I really liked the potential the photo had, but thought it needed to pop a bit more. Thoughts?

Myopia Distopia

Is it possible to undo 'clouding' on cellulose acetate and plastic eyeglass frames? I've been wearing plastic and/or acetate cellulose eyeglass frames for years and years. After a year or so of wear, said frames always start to form cloudy white discoloration, maybe due to skin oils, maybe due to washing/getting wet... I don't really know. But the funny thing is, the cloudiness varies a bit from time to time, sometimes getting a little better, and sometimes a little worse. But it's generally ugly, leading me to spend money to replace frames sooner than I would for other reasons (not to mention abandoning kick ass frames like the ones I have now).

Does anyone have any tips on restoring frames to their former luster and glory? Or failing that, any preventative tips for the future?
