To screw, or not to screw...

I have a stress fracture in the compression side of my femoral neck at my hip. My doctor has given me the options. I'm wondering if anyone happens to have experience (personal or otherwise) with this type of injury, and how did it go? [more inside]

Should I have surgery or let fracture heal on its own?

I fell down and broke my foot. Oops. My doctor said it can heal fine without surgery. She said she could also do surgery and it might heal a little faster or prevent problems later, but only maybe. I'm not sure what I should choose. [more inside]

How do you know when a stress fracture has healed?

My 11 year old daughter suffered two stress fractures in the top of her foot back in May. It is now late July and she is still in a lot of pain and still on crutches, unable to bear any weight, even in a boot. The orthopedic says it is because she needs physical therapy and that she should be healed by now. [more inside]

Broken Metatarsals in Dogs 101

Fractured metatarsals in dogs. My dog has broken three metatarsals in one hind paw - the fractures are straight across in the same line. We've been advised to see an orthopedic vet to discuss surgery vs. splinting. What should we know going into this meeting? Can you suggest good questions to ask? Can this kind of injury be caused by stress, i.e. jumping on a hard surface? [more inside]

How to cope with a broken arm?

My girlfriend just broke her arm a few inches above the elbow (spiral fracture). She's currently in a splint and will possibly get a plate and pins in a few days. She works at a desk job, which she will return to after a week or two of rest. What can we do to make life easier (tips, special equipment, etc)?

Kids, I can feel the spring coming up in my finger.

I fractured my right index finger about 9 months ago when a table-saw kicked a small square of plywood at high velocity into the end of the 'metacarpal' near the first joint. I taped it up and after about six weeks it felt basically normal. It is straight and I have full mobility however, with the coming of spring, it has started to ache, sometimes distractlingly so... so what's going on?

The orthopedic surgeon casts extra healing ...

I broke my humerus and now have a great big cast. I am concerned about the fact that I can feel some movement at times. Specifically, if I try to rotate my elbow (not the curl/uncurl motion, but side-to-side), I feel like the arm moves but in reality it doesn't (observably move). That makes me worry that the bones may be moving ... in which case how can they heal together? Also, do the cast covers for showering work? [more inside]

Wrist pain, very likely a sprain: just watch and wait?

I have some wrist pain from my wrist being twisted, which by all signs appears to be a sprain rather than anything more serious.
