I run a forum where we discuss open source book scanning technology. Many users visit only occasionally. In a recent update, PHPBB enabled a feature called "Auto User Pruning", and it deleted users who had not logged in for 24 months. Two Thousand Users were deleted. It did not delete their posts, and their account names are still attached to their posts.
me restore these users from my database backups or via some other method.

MFers where do you like to go to discuss or read discussions about music, specifically modern electronic music? I don't mean where to read articles, reviews, interviews; those are nice, and I read those websites, and I know most of those websites have forums... but most of them don't seem to be very good, and to be honest I haven't really, really explored them. Is there anywhere that consistently has a high level discourse from users? Or is it all 90% signatures, images, and yelling "BIG TRACK" ... [more inside]

Scenario: Office employees need to be able to log into a system and post opinions/comments on a daily basis for a period of 10 days. These need to be threaded and in response to a prompting question or two each time. Employees should be able to read thru other comments and look back thru older threads.
I know there's a gazillion forum systems, and blog alternatives. Do you have a recommendation on which particular system would be best? I do not need a lot of features beyond what's described above. Most blog features would not be used. Not a public (ie. Facebook) type system.
Bonus points for:
~ Clean, easy, pleasing, spare interface.
~ Back end tracking by user.
~ Easy install.

any recommendations for good forums for doctors , especially places to post interesting/problematic cases and get feedback? It might be that the forum is not restricted to doctors or medical professionals, but should have a high signal to noise ratio, something sadly lacking on most consumer driven medical forums....

I've been toying with the idea of starting a website that's sort of half forum, half store. I have a general understanding of how the web works, but I haven't done anything web design-ey for about ten years, and even then I was definitely quite amateur. What would I need to do to get going? I have tried Elgg and BuddyPress, but those solutions just don't seem to work very well, mostly because of issues with the templates.
I want to develop an online community that is based around my online radio station.
The community should have forums, chat, galleries, user search, comments, walls, and
all the other basic stuff that comes with an online community. It needs to be completely graphically customisable
I'm looking for the best solution that is under $600, but preferable free.
