I am a grad student in the physical sciences and I've got questions, but I work in a small group on a project by myself so a lot of the times I have simple questions that can take a while to dig out of papers. Is there a good forum or message board that is generally accepted to be useful for posing questions and such? [more inside]

Working artists together. Do you know of any online community or email list where artists from all disciplines discuss practical working issues? Issues like negotiating commissions and contracts, our experiences with residencies and artist colonies, etc.?

Is there any research supporting an inverse correlation between the level of anger in a person's tone and the quality or relevance of their information? I'm sure I read something like that somewhere, but I forgot. Any ideas? [more inside]

I run a small, private forum for a few friends who are scattered across the US & Canada. I'm looking for easy ways to incorporate other ways for me to enable additional communication between members - whether it's a group voice chat or a chat room. I need help figuring out how to do this very easily
(I was barely technical enough to install a pretty skin for my phpBB), very cheaply
(preferably free), and so that it maintains a reasonable level of privacy
. Can you help me figure this out? [more inside]

I own a forum where the majority of our posters are minors. What can I (or should I) do about a user who is sending sexual advances to other members via our PM system? He keeps coming back under new names after we ban him and we aren’t sure what legal obligations we may have regarding this.

My friends and I are working - and when I say working, I should add that it is with only very vague direction as we are almost all self-taught - on a web project which we think would be very useful to many people. It is in some small respect tangentially similar to Metafilter, but would not compete with it. Are there any out-of-the-box products, commercial or free, that allow a similar question-and-answer (or comment-and-answer) functionality, where anyone can post and/or comment? [more inside]

Is it ever OK to change peoples posts on a web forum? Say theoretically a government department ran a consultation via web forum, with invited, non anonymous participants, and wasn't happy with what some of their own staff said. Would it be ok for them to order the staff to edit the posts? Are there any useful examples of the consequences?

What's the simplest, easiest, fastest way to create a search engine for a discussion website (in particular, this one
) which is NOT RUN by that website, but on another computer, and which recognizes as searchable/sortable fields: 1) the "board" the post is in, 2) the titles as well as the bodies of posts, and 3) the dates the posts were made? Oh, and it should update with new posts every few hours, say.

My wife and I are about to launch a new web startup. This is her second successful venture and I am moving from agency creative to join her. Throughout the process, there are many opportunities to reinvent the wheel and I would love to connect with other people that are putting their nest eggs on the line and taking the web 2.0 leap.
I am looking for a "founders forum" for entrepreneurs. Does anyone know of a forum or community that is centered around the trials and tribulations of serious startups?

I'm looking for easy-to-manage community forum software.
I run a site hosted at Dreamhost, and would like to add a message board for community discussion. I'm not averse to using phpbb (which Dreamhost can auto-install) if it can be made administrator-friendly. (I find the current admin panel a frustrating pile of crap.) In particular, I don't want to have to mess with spam user registrations
. Ideally users could register and use the site with ease, while spammers would be blocked with minimal intervention on my part. (Kind of how WordPress/Akismet deals with spam comments.) I rather like the Joel on Software discussion group
layout — clean, simple, yet effective. Willing to pay, if needed.

I'm running a PhPBB forum. Spammers have found it. Mysterious strangers selling vigorous blue pills popped up from nowhere.
Now I need to build something that will prevent spammers from polluting it. Is there a silver bullet that prevents all spammers from ever posting on PHPBB forums ? (I know, but I'm an eternal optimistic).
Any antispam mods that has been successfullyt tested someone would like to recommend ?
Thanks in adavance.
