I am an American working in Tokyo and get paid in Yen. I have way too much Yen now, and I want to change to USD, especially because the rate is relatively good at the moment. I would like to hear any anecdotal evidence about the cheapest way to change JPY to USD. [more inside]
I have an iPhone 6S on AT&T and am a Mac user. I'm headed to Colombia for a week, where I'll use a local SIM. I'd like to check my American phone #'s incoming text messages every few days. What are my options? My contacts are (per normal) a blend of iMessage users and SMS users. [more inside]
I manage a small team of software support people based in the West Coast United States. Now I'd like to hire one or more people based in Europe (I'm thinking maybe Berlin, Germany or Stockholm, Sweden) who would do the same thing (and whose hours would line up better with our European clientele). I've begun to do some research into the logistics of employing a German in Germany (just for starters) but I feel like I'm not getting far. Have you done this? What works best? [more inside]
Short version: a friend and I would like to have some experiences that allow us to temporarily but deeply plunge into another world/culture/paradigm that is markedly different than our own. We don't want to actually BECOME [Francophones/farmers/Amish/rock stars/Uzbekistanis/etc.]; we just want to quietly, respectfully inhabit their world(s) for brief intervals of time. More under the cut. [more inside]
I wish to send my dear Finnish penpal a bunch of cool things you can only buy in Canada (and maybe also stuff that may be sold elsewhere but is only really popular in Canada). What to send, MeFi? [more inside]
Since I’ve started enjoying A(ustralian)BC’s Soundproof podcast I've come to realize that beyond the CBC and BBC, my podcasts are very U.S.-centric. What are some good English-language podcasts from other parts of the globe? While news roundtables like Sinica are good, I'm primarily interested in spoken word or well-produced radio pieces, like Everything Is Stories, This Is Actually Happening, Love + Radio, and Unfictional. Thanks!
Looking for recommendations for currency transfer services that are reputable, reliable and won't tack on as many fees as an international bank wire. This is for sending from a personal bank account in the US (from USD) and transferring to a personal bank account in South Korea (to KRW). In case it makes a difference, I'm interested in both of these scenarios: [more inside]
I'd like to find out what some of the most worthless currency is in the world and then get my hands on a lot of it. Not counterfeits. The real stuff. Like where 100 dollars US is literally tens of thousands of a dollars worth of Brupals from Unobtainiastan in whatever form is most conducive to getting a briefcase's worth of seemingly high denomination bills. So A) what currency should I be trying to get? and B) Where would I get them?
TaxFilter day continues! In 2014 my mother-in-law made my wife a cosigner on her German bank account. The account is substantial (over €100,000 but under €150,000) and, of course, we need to fill out FinCEN 114 and IRS 8398. The instructions for IRS 8398 only cover "joint" account holders in the context of marriage. How do we approach this? [more inside]

I have been offered a somewhat prestigious job in foreign news. I have been working in other areas of journalism for the last decade, but am not particularly well versed in international news. So I am looking to bone up on, basically, the entire history of the world, all of its current political leaders/conflicts, geography, current expert thinkers/critics on regional international questions. Aside from getting a world map shower curtain, what else should I be doing? [more inside]
Thirty years ago, I remember my dad buying bulk t-shirts from one of several companies advertised in the back of magazines. These shirts would have random company logos in random languages, and were clearly a way for t-shirt printers around the world to get rid of overstock. It was like a surprise box every time. How I can make the most out of a few months living in a foreign country? If you've spent time living abroad, what kinds of things were you most glad you did (and/or most regret not doing)? I am in a foreign country. I just had an encounter with another foreigner, on his way back to his own country, which went along the lines of “You’ll never make it here, you are destined to be unhappy, these are people for whom lying is second-nature.” I just moved here and I feel like I’m being sabotaged. I have moved to a foreign country and am looking for suggestions as to how to get along in the best way possible until I can return to the US. I am a single woman with a professional background. I came to this country to reconnect with my ancestral roots. I have found the culture and behavior really appalling and irritating on a profound level as well as being sexist at a very deep level. Looking for a movie I saw on TV in the 80s that was about a sad clown/mime who left his circus and was wandering around the city - a foreign city, probably Europe. It is NOT Children of Paradise, but maybe some remake inspired by it. I believe it was a foreign film and was probably shown on Nickelodeon - it was a color film. Very atmospheric and followed the clown wandering in the city. Any ideas?

My dad speaks fluent Spanish (and English). I am third-year student of Spanish. Mom and dad know some French. My younger brother (13 years old) only knows English. We all like good plots, good music, and good cinematography. Please suggest some non-English language movies, documentaries, TV series, etc. that we would all enjoy. Bonus points if it's available through Netflix streaming or DVD.

So, you know how Hollywood sometimes makes big stupid films that flop at home (at times not making enough money), but then they release the films abroad and they do well (enough to make more money and sometimes merit a sequel!)? Does the reverse happen as well? Are their foreign films that do well in the US (and I'll include critical success as much as popularity -- and popularity among people who go see foreign films), but in their home countries, they are considered silly or stupid or just not good?

I just had my Verizon iPhone 4s unlocked for international use and confirmed working with two different foreign SIM cards. Three questions:
- Is this permanent? Can it ever be re-locked via software or some other method?
- Can this be used with US SIM cards, or are there restrictions?
- Is this phone now identical to an unlocked iPhone, or is it somehow different?
