I'm curious about a phenomenon I've observed many times on Twitter. In the reply threads of tweets by Justin Bieber and other pop celebrities, you see a enormous amount of nearly content-free chatter by superfans ("Follow me please", "I love you", "OMG", etc). What's puzzling is that in the majority of cases, despite their inane content, the accounts posting this stuff seem to have enormous numbers of followers (many are 5000 or 8000+, more than many actual public figures), despite only following a modest few hundred accounts themselves. Where are all these followers coming from? Is this some sort of Belieber-specific phenomenon?

I stumbled across a producer who has had 720,659 listeners to one of her tracks. It has also been favorited 12740 times. Yet she has 12 tracks, is following 404 people and is followed by 114 people. Why doesn't she have a lot of followers? I thought I understood it and the thinking of how and why people use it, but I must not.

Why did my Twitter count suddenly jump by 8,000?
When I started Twitter about a years ago, my Tweet-to-Follower ratio was about one-to-one. When they added the re-tweet feature to my Twitter stream, that ratio dropped to about 3 to 2. Yesterday I had about 3.3K tweets, now it says about 11.3K. It's been hovering around 3,000+ for weeks now. Why the sudden jump? Is is possible that this was caused by a hacker getting into my account, or are a lot of Twitter users experiencing this?

Twitter question: Is there a tool which will let me see who the people I follow are themselves following, in aggregate
? Of course, you can see who a given person follows, but so far as I know, you can only look at one account at a time. I'd like to see this information all grouped together in one place, and ideally sorted by popularity (i.e., with the sites followed by the most people toward the top). Thanks.

Is there a way that I can get Twitter to automatically send a private message to new followers, to thank them for following me? [more inside]
