Every other year I throw a Nordic-themed winter solstice party to welcome the return of the sun. In addition to Nordic foods like Herring, meatballs, and Swedish fish I like to play music from the north. I want to branch out from Bjork, Sibelius and Abba.
I have already downloaded the album from Árstíðir which was featured on metafilter.
Can you suggest musicians/songs/bands/composers from Nordic countries (or from Arctic regions) that are sung in their native language rather than English?

Is there a generic term for music like ""Heaven Bound"
by Los Duggans? I recognize their influences (bluegrass, gospel, etc.), but the specifics elude me -- the particular combination of nihilism/religious fundamentalist references (ironic or genuine, to say nothing of the electric bass) seems like the sort of thing that would arise from a subculture, so I suspect there's a generic term for their type of music that I'm not aware of. For Camp NaNoWriMo, I am planning a sci-fi book in which labor politics play a significant role in the plot. I'd like to listen to music associated with the historical labor movement while I'm planning and writing. I only speak English, but will listen in any language. What have you got for me?

I'm looking for any information on an Italian folk song "Tutti Mi Chiaman Mario"
I'm looking for anything from personal reminiscences, to a copy of the lyrics, information about its origin, to academic analysis - anything at all.

Seeking song reccommendations for a song circle/singalong in the woods. I want songs that are simple to teach, fun to sing, sound good, and don't
make you feel like a 10-year-old at summer camp. Drinking songs, sea shanties, rounds, folk songs, etc. [more inside]

I'm looking for 'Folk' Web Cultures. I am thinking of the recent take-down of Geocities, which seemed to refresh people's love of the naff, kitsch aesthetic it was famous for, as a prime example. What are some other folk cultures still lingering in the dark corners of the web? [more inside]

I have a song stuck in my head and can't remember what it is. It's a fairly tranquil, folky song sung by a woman. What I can remember of the lyrics has something about years: "[something something something] nineteen sixty nine [something] seventy eight." Ringing any bells?

I've been filling some of my idle time by playing Bastion (previously
), and have fallen in love with the soundtrack
. I'm pretty sure I remember some thematically similar stuff in Firefly, as well, for what that's worth. The Bastion team have categorized it as "acoustic frontier trip-hop," but since that's a genre that they pretty much just made up, I was hoping that my fellow AskMe folks could point me at other similar music. Special snowflake details after the break. [more inside]

Anyone from Georgia around (not the one in the south - the one in the Caucasus). I am fascinated by this Georgian folk song
, which I think is somehow related to this piece
by Tsintsadze because the melody structure seem a little similar and (I think) they share a name, "sachidao". That's all I know, and I really like this song. If you're Georgian, or just happen to know Georgian folk music, can you tell me more about it? [more inside]

I'm looking for folk tales about romantic love. The shorter and sweeter (in both senses!) the better. No tragic endings, nothing terribly vulgar, and definitely appropriate for a range of audiences.

I'm looking for a recording of a song, but I can't find it anywhere, or even who might have recorded it! In Get Up

I'm looking for a recently released album that was actually recorded in the 70s but was only released now. The name was something like Torrey Canyon, Torrey Pines, Laurel Canyon (but Google is not helping me here), any ideas? I really wanted to listen to it but it's looking like I have the name completely wrong.
I believe I originally heard about it on Metafilter.
I do not have lyrics, because I haven't heard it!
Note: it is not Torrey Canyon LTD, from Kent, OH.
