How can I find the best foam mattress on a limited (<$400) budget? [more inside]

My girlfriend recently purchased a foam mattress topper, for our extra-firm hand-me-down queen mattress. It currently resides between the fitted sheet and the mattress, but it creeps down the bed, night by night. The bed doesn't have a footboard, and the mattress topper ends up sagging off the bottom of the bed, and not reaching to where your head goes. [more inside]

I need a new mattress. While shopping around, I tried one of those TemPurpedic, Swedish foam mattersses. They are about 4x more than I would ever expect to pay for a bed, but i am tempted. Anyone have any experience/advice/tips on these? Worth it or not? Any cheaper alternatives?
