I briefly worked an early-morning shift at a college radio station in the late 90s. One of the first things I had to do was call a number, listen to an automated voice read out a series of numbers (which I vaguely remember as being related in some way to the transmitter), and write them down into a logbook. Three-part question: what was I doing, is this still done today, and where, if anywhere, can I hear that voice again?

Consumer tech question: looking for an AM/FM radio that can dock an iPhone 4 that is also copacetic with Pandora and other music apps. The Crosley iSolo looked good, but some reviews suggest you can't use music apps, which is a deal-breaker. Clock, etc. unimportant and, aesthetically, an old-school look and feel would be ideal (i.e., nothing too super-mod looking). Any suggestions, MeFites?

I love the song "Time Passages" by Al Stewart from the same-titled album. I am one of the few that actually like the radio edit better. I cannot find it anywhere available to listen to or download though know it was on 1978 AM Gold by Time-Life which I cannot afford (rare CD). I tried getting that cd from interlibrary loan to no avail. Does anybody know where else it might be lurking?

When I was a teenager in the 1980's, I noticed that if I turned the radio dial on my FM radio all the way to the end, I picked up this weird transmission of repeating tones.

A number of radios I've owned in my life, in addition to the AM and FM frequency labels, also have a "Scale" label, going from 1 to 10, across the range of frequencies. What's this all about? Is it ever used for anything? I've never heard a radio station say "Tune to 6 on your Scale Bar".

I hook my Ipod to my car stereo using an FM transmitter. Before setting out I'd like to choose a frequency that's not going to compete with local radio stations en-route. Is there a simple list of frequencies likely to be safe from interference? Alternatively has anybody done yet built some kind mash-up website that would give me a frequency for a given journey? I am in the UK but would be interested if this has been done anywhere.

Is there any flash-based mp3 player that plays WAV files, has an FM tuner, records standard (44.1) WAV files from this FM tuner, has a 1GB or higher capacity, and is not much over $100? (I'm also grateful for any "almost" answers, since those might help me refine my Googling.)

I use an FM transmitter for my MP3 player. When I went through a tunnel in Pittsburgh this past weekend, I thought that the reception would have come in crystal clear since most of the radio interference would be missing. Instead it fuzzed out the same way a radio station in a tunnel does. Why?

Is there a way to get a comprehensive list of radio stations in a city? I've tried looking at the FCC's web site, but the best I can come up with is a list of *all* the frequency allocations in an area, including taxi services, pager companies, etc, which is quite a few pages long.
I just want to find the commercial FM broadcast stations (Austin, TX by the way).
