My partner and I are flying from the west coast to the east coast at the end of July with our 15lb cat, Buddy. Which carrier should I choose? [more inside]
My 2.5 year old toddler is going to be flying for the first time since she was a baby next week. We've been talking to her about it a bit, but I'd love to show her a video that would prepare her for the experience (security, boarding, taking off, landing, etc). I've found a few videos that show the process, but nothing really geared for toddlers.
I'm used to odd noises from aeroplanes flying over my house, but in the past 15 minutes, two planes have flown over much lower, much faster and a shedload noisier than usual. How can I find out what's going on? More information: I live near Boston, in Medford. I am outside of the Class B controlled airspace for BOS. I've looked at FlightRadar24, but whatever it was didn't seem to be on there. I am not that far from Hanscom AFB, but am outside of their controlled airspace.
I particularly hate flying. I'm also not good at being in strange places, but the flying is my big concern at the moment. I have to fly in a few days and even though this is a trip for fun, that I expect to enjoy (in between the flights), I am filled with dread when I think about it. [more inside]
I am flying a contractor to Montreal today to pick up some very important, time-sensitive packages for my business, and then flying him back to the US tomorrow with the parcels. I'm really out of my element here and it's super critical that the delivery go off without a hitch. Please help walk me through the process of retrieval, customs, dealing with agents and brokers, paying duties, etc. [more inside]
My wife and I are flying soon and I want to try the mobile app check-in and boarding pass. However, we are both on the account for the tickets. Has anyone used the app when more than one person is flying, and if so, what did you do?
It's been quite some time since I've been on a flight, let alone one with checked baggage. I'm going to San Antonio at the end of next month. I would appreciate some assistance regarding how this works given all the new rules and the freaking horror stories... [more inside]
I want to go to South East Asia this fall for my honeymoon, but the thing is I don't really care which country or city we go to first, or which city I fly from in the US, or even care particularly about when we go as long as it's after August. All I really want is the cheapest flight I can get across the pacific that will be comfortable for a 10+ hour flight (I'm over 6 feet tall, and the idea of sitting in economy for 10+ hours is a nightmare). Is this something that it's worth getting a travel agent for or is there some trick to doing this using ITA or something similar?
How do I safely execute this blender trick? [more inside]
Every year I buy a bunch of gifts, schlepp them home, and wrap them surreptitiously in a secret corner of my mom's house about 3 minutes before I have to give them over, all in the name of national security. Am I being stupid? Can I do this differently? [more inside]
Traveling to New Zealand from the United States (Raleigh) in January, any travel pro routes to NZ that are non-obvious but might be cheaper? [more inside]
Would you take your 4 month old baby on an overseas flight? We want to fly to Europe next the fall, probably an 8 hour flight from where we are. We're also having our first baby in the spring. We feel like it would be an adventure (!) that could maybe be a bad idea. Has anyone flown overseas and had it gone very well or very terribly? Anything we should know? We are trying to imagine our lives post-baby and we very much want travel to be a part of it, but is 4 months too young? [more inside]
How do I get a large poster tube from France to the US? Do I try to carry it on, or risk shipping it? [more inside]
I'm flying from the West Coast to the East Coast of the US in 24 hours and was about to check in when I realized my name was wrong on the itinerary. Say my name is Katie Smith - it's listed in my booking as Katiems Smith. I'm pretty sure Google Flight just mashed together my first name and Ms., but now it's appears at Katiems on the itinerary and obviously my passport and driver's license say Katie. What to do? What categories of (or what specific) jobs and/or career paths in large corporations are least likely to require travel with turnaround and/or distance that necessitates flying? What types of industries (while otherwise thriving) seem to be paring down their travel budgets and relying more on videoconferencing and similar tech? What about government jobs? Are you a highly successful ........ and don't, or at least have never been required to, fly for work? I would love to know about your job. [more inside]
I always get motion sickness on boats, and if the weather is bad enough, on airplanes. I love to travel, so this is a real bummer. I've tried both Dramamene and the behind-the-ear patches, and neither really helps. What can I do to really deal with the motion sickness without being a sleep-addled zombie? [more inside]
In 2001, I was on a passenger jet that made an emergency landing shortly after takeoff. Right around the time we would have reached 10,000 feet, there was an "explosion" (I think?) in one of the engines. After landing, the pilot told us what it was, but I can't remember. Help me remember the term? [more inside]

I'm going to be flying alone next month with my baby who will be almost one month old then. She just stopped nursing, and she's very much into crawling, rolling, and standing right now (as I type, she's not yet walking). She doesn't sleep when she's being held; she needs a crib or her carseat for that. There's no direct flight between here and destination city, and we can either divide it up between two 3-hour flights or one five-hour and one one-hour. I'm not a good flyer when I'm responsible only for myself, so I'm positively daunted by traveling alone with my daughter. I would appreciate any advice you could give me. [more inside]

We traveled a couple of weeks ago, and my 7 month old got a respiratory virus and got very sick. Sent from pediatrician's office to ER to PICU sick. Based on timing, Occam's Razor says she caught it on the plane. We will be flying again in a few weeks. I would like practical tips for things we can do on the plane to minimize the risk of her getting sick again. [more inside]
I'm flying alone internationally for the first time. Help me make it as painless as possible. [more inside]
In the near future, I will be flying alone several times with a 3.5 year old and a 7 month old. Lucky me. On at least some occasions, I will have someone bringing us to the airport or meeting us on the other end. I hear it's theoretically possible for that person to obtain a gate pass, and help us get to the plane (or meet us when we get off). We'll be fine ON the plane, but having help in the airport would be a real sanity saver. I know that gate passes are not handed out like candy and generally require cause. Does this constitute cause? What are your experiences with requesting / obtaining / being refused gate passes? Does it help to call ahead? Who would you call? Bonus points if you can speak specifically to Chicago O'Hare, Atlanta Hartsfield, or Panama City, FL.
My brother and I will be flying from Beijing to Rome on the Russian airline Aeroflot. We've recently heard about Aeorflot's terrible safety rating from friends. Additionally, we will have a four hour layover in Moscow and we're a little worried because of the current Russia-Ukraine situation. Should we cancel our flight and book another on a more reputable airline? [more inside]
Anonymous because I'm not sure if legal action is a possibility. After many times of travelling with his CPAP machine with absolutely no problem, my SO was not allowed to board with it this time at our local airport. (There was a death in his family and he was flying on short notice.) They insisted it needed an FAA approval stamp or at the very least a letter from the manufacturer. We found the relevant letter on our smartphone but the airline employee (the one who was holding the machine hostage) insisted it had to be "on their letterhead." With only an hour before the flight took off, he had to go without it -for three nights. I called the TSA, and they were shocked. I called the relevant airline, and they put me on hold and then told me it was a local airport rule. I sent an email to the airport, and they claim it is an airline rule, and that I was misinformed, and that they were passing my email to the local rep of the airline. (after I responded.) I have not heard back so far. [more inside]

I have a Boston Terrier and would like to take him on a plane. Airline rules say Bostons are "snub-nosed" dogs that are not allowed on planes. But this particularly charming Boston is not "snub nosed" at all. His nose is not squishy. No breathing problems. He has a noble carriage! Many people think he is, in fact, some other breed. Is there any leniency in airline policy on this? (Pic inside!) [more inside]

After not travelling much for most of my life, I've been on a quite a few flights in the past year, and plan on flying more in the future, domestic and international. I've just been using Orbitz, etc, to book flights, but are there better ways to do it if you're flying often? Should I focus on one carrier? How do frequent flyer miles work and how can I best take advantage of them? Is there a good resource for figuring all this stuff out? [more inside]

My friend found a number of European postcards from around 1904 to 1907, each with a similar motif -- a mustachioed, suit-wearing man flying above the city using an umbrella, holding a suitcase in his other hand. You can see some examples here. Do you know more about this meme? [more inside]
My wife and I are moving across the country in a few months with our furballs, Steve and Lola. We're going to fly with them, but I'm not sure if they would be better off with us in the cabin or in cargo. The trip is unavoidably going to involve two flights, the first one will be about 6 to 6:30 hours in length, the second will be 2 to 2:30 hours. The layover between them could be as short as an hour. So total travel time, including getting to/from the airports will probably be around 12-13 hours. [more inside]

I'm catching a morning flight out of JFK next Saturday and I need to leave my car at the airport for a few days. I would like to use the on-airport long term parking lot because it looks like there's AirTrain access, but I don't think you can reserve those spots. So I've got two questions: 1) is the parking lot (on Lefferts Boulevard) hard to find? 2) what are the odds that there won't be any spots when I show up? Thanks!
Early May revelry-filled weekend excursion from NYC to Montreal for a group of roughly 12 20-somethings. We see time advantages to flying (provided all goes smoothly) but cost disadvantages. We see cost advantages to driving ourselves, but would like to minimize our personal stress and maximize fun. We see personal stress and maximum fun advantages to being driven, but have no experience with long-distance transporation charter and are unclear on whether this would be cheaper than flying. Any suggestions / experiences?
For the flights that I'm booking between London (UK) and Boston (US), Virgin Atlantic and American Airlines have effectively identical flight times and prices. Can any seasoned pond-hoppers recommend one airline over the other, and tell me why? [more inside]
I was just going over our flight info-my husband and I and our two adult daughters are flying out to Texas to my son's wedding. The travel agent is calling me back in a bit but how screwed are we? [more inside]
