What do I need to know about club flyers?

From the point of view of a newby promoter, what do I need to know about night club flyers? I'm a newby club promoter and DJ, based in London. Along with a couple of other guys, we've done a few nights here and there, but just local things. Now though we're looking to up our game a bit, so we've booked a respectable small-ish venue for a friday evening in a couple of months, and we're looking to book a lower mid-card techno DJ or two as our guest DJs. The venue can expect to get a certain amount of regular customers and passing trade, but we need to fill the rest using promotion. We've got a website, a Facebook group and a mailing list with a couple of hundred people, and we should get our listing in Timeout etc.

So the question is, can someone tell me what I should know about club flyers? What do I need to know about design and printing them (we've got a proper designer on board to do the graphic design part of it). How many do we need to print to see decent returns? What's the best way to distribute them? How do flyer packs (like Don't Panic) work? In the web age, is worth printing up flyers at all?

Cheers in advance, being rather new to this all, any advice here would be greatly appreciated.

What is the legality of posting flyers to telephone poles and similar public spaces in Lyon, France, for the purpose of advertising a private, for-profit service such as language tutoring? Or: where online can I find this information? Another in a series of questions about the city. . .

Stephen Colbert was just holding up a jersey on The Colbert Report (4/15) that was: part (1/4) Flyers jersey, part Sixers jersey, part Eagles jersey, and part Phillies jersey. Like a beautiful Philadelphia sports patchwork quilt jersey shirt. Can I buy this jersey? Does it exist outside of The Colbert Report?

It's the way to go...

A few friends have started a Go Club at our school (we meet weekly, and we want to raise attendance at these meetings). We've introduced a fair number of people to the game personally, but now we're looking to introduce the general public (university and otherwise) to the game and club. I think flyering is the obvious first step, and I'm looking for advice on that and other promotional tips. As far as flyering goes, the strategy is to put up a flyers such that any theoretical student/faculty member would have to see them at some point over the course of the week (the main classroom buildings, the various departmental office bulletin boards, dorms, etc). Where else would you advertise for something like this (particularly off campus)?

Designing the flyer to capture people who already play (probably a fairly a small group in Lexington, Kentucky) shouldn't be too hard. How do we encourage people who have never heard of this (practically everyone), or don't play board games in general to come out?

How do YOU get the data on the page?

I would love some examples of high end print design workflows, especially database driven ones. Store circulars, flyers, etc. The more complete the workflow you can describe, the better. So I ask you, when you produce your chain store circulars...how do you do it?

Is the entire layout automated by one button push? Do you receive tagged text files that you lay out manually? Are they broken up by page? Do you use templates? In what manner? Do you use a database connection program like InCatalog, but all layout is handled manually? Do you generate queries? Do you just specify a group of items and then they lay out automatically? Do you find all of this quick and easy or do you want to strangle somebody? What do you wish you could generate/specify for the layout people? What do you wish the copy people have given you?

Since this is still brainstorm, I'd love any and all workflows, anything where you talk about ways of generating and passing data to us page crafters, as specific as possible. The software, the techniques, everything. (While newspapers seem like they would be very similar to this, I've found they aren't, still feel free to tell me about it)

That sounds like chatfilter, but oh boy do I have a real world problem I'm looking to solve! Long explanation, partially just venting, partially so you can see how your example might relate. While suggestions will be appreciated, I am much more interested in seeing what the options out there are.

I work at a distributing company, we (I) produce a monthly flyer by hand. It's not incredibly long but it's very tedious. Currently, the editors give me paste-ups of each page and then I recreate it by pasting in from old files or recreating by hand. I have produced (with Access, VB, & InDesign) a full inventory catalog (completely automated! one button push! I am Calvin, builing a robot to clean my room!) but we haven't been able to do that for the monthly. Largely due to the fact that each editor would have to describe each page in somewhat abstract data. (i.e. an excel file for each page, list of items on that page, for me to generate a query from), meaning it's easier for both of us to just paste up, since I'd have to connect, import and juggle all that data before I even start auto-generating pages. We're getting ODBC connections to our data which means I now have to figure out what level of specifications the editors would have to give me and some of that is figuring out what control we need to hold onto and what is just force of habit.

TIME TO ROCK OUT!

I'm having a party on Nov 11th to celebrate the release of Guitar Hero 2 and to rock out to new songs with my friends. I was thinking it might be cool to hang up some fake flyers for my in-game band (Della Rhesus Monkey) around my place for flavor. I have no idea how to go about it, though. I have access to Photoshop, but have very little skill in it. How best to capture that "crappy local band flyer" feeling? Any other suggestions on how to add some nice flavor to the party? (I already have a wig and leather wristbands.)

Help me start my guitar teaching side biz

Last week AskMe helped me decide to start giving guitar lessons. I've taught many people how to play, but never formally or for pay. I live in an urban area surrounded by schools and rec centers, so getting the word out by flyer will be easy. In order to be properly prepared there is ... What I need help with is:

1. The Flyer: How much info should it include?

2. Pricing: I have 2 hours a day M-F, but I have no idea how much I should charge or how long a typical lesson is. 1/2 hr?

3. How much should I cater to parents? Because of where I live, I imagine some parents are going to want to see lesson plans and stuff. Should I care or just teach my way? (I do have lesson plans, but every kid is different, so I would like to avoid giving parents false expectations.)

4. Is there any reason to avoid adult students? And/or should I charge them more?

I'm really excited about this, but nervous too. Any thoughts, ideas or inspiration is appreciated.

Designing an email flyer

My dad has written and illustrated a comic book and needs to send an email flyer to as many comic book stores as possible in the next two weeks. We have a master list to go from. I'm not sure what is the most efficient way of harvesting those email addresses are, but I'll bet it's nothing more than copy+paste grunt work, right? Correct me if I'm wrong. But what's got me is how the email flyer should be presented... my dad wants it in html with images, but I'm not sure how that can be achieved without it being annoying for the recipient. Are there any rules/guidelines/how-to's on how to construct visually appealing emails?

Online Print Shops

Online Print Shop Services: I'm looking to do a couple runs of flyers in the 1000-5000 range. What's the cheapest online service you've found for this? I've already looked into Psprint, and that's friggin' cheap, but i'd like to get an even better deal, either by doing a smaller run, or by finding a shop that'll do onesided two color (grayscale and one spot, or black and one spot) for reaaaaaly cheap.

right now the cheapest i can get at psprint is $125. I'd like to shoot for something around $60. size isn't a concern.

i'd also be into finding out about any other cool online print services (for stickers, etc), for example, like the buttons at http://www.busybeaver.net/.
