I keep reading stories (
1,
2, and
this previous question) about how bad this year's flu season is. It's been a few months since the vaccine has been available so have they been able to determine if this year's vaccine matches up with the flu strains that are spreading? Meaning, is this year's flu vaccine actually effective? When is that determination made?

I'm travelling up and down the northeast US starting next Sunday. The first person I'm going to see has told me she's coming down with the flu. If I get a flu shot now (or I guess tomorrow since it's Christmas) will it do me any good?

Swine flu vaccine question: If I've gotten the seasonal flu vaccine in the past without any complications, does this mean that I don't have to worry about the "Guillain-Barre syndrome" that hit people in 1976? Or will the H1N1 vaccine be formulated differently that the seasonal flu vaccine? This question is prompted by this article...

Pregnant women are advised to get the flu vaccine. Pregnant women are also advised to avoid mercury. The vast majority of the flu vaccine stock available in the US contains thimerosol. Should a pregnant woman get vaccinated with a flu vaccine that contains thimerosol? Does your answer vary depending on the stage of pregnancy?
