Go away food smells, go away flies

Hi, I'm having trouble with cooking smells lingering in my apartment. Plot twist: My windows have no screens and anytime I open them I get at least three flies in my apartment, which drives me nuts and grosses me out. Seriously, even if my window is only open a few minutes, flies get in. What can I do? I can't bear the food smells and I can't bear flies in my home! [more inside]

Possible dead rat in walls / housefly infestation, landlord is gone

My landlord is currently out of the country until the end of the month. I've emailed her, but haven't heard back yet, and am not sure what steps I need to take if I suspect a dead rat is in my walls. There are dozens of flies in my apartment and a bad smell that I can't pinpoint. [more inside]

Name that 60s or 70s cartoon! Flies and a matchbox.

Google-fu fail. In the late 60 or early 70s, as a kid in Detroit, I remember a Saturday morning cartoon (possibly just a short within a cartoon variety show) featuring a dragonfly, a horsefly, and, I think, a fruit fly. They lived in a matchbox. I remember it being my "favorite show" at some point. Keep in mind it very well may have been a one-off that the years have converted into a series in my mind. [more inside]

What fly repellent do I want?

I hike a lot in Northern California. I've been getting swarmed by flies, and today several of them bit me. I'm not allergic or hugely reactive to the bites, but the constant buzzing in my ears is really annoying. What product or ingredient should I be looking for to keep the flies away? If it also repels ticks, even better. [more inside]

What are these beasties, can they bite, and how do I get rid of them?

I am in the UK. I get several itchy bites per night, mostly on the back of my neck. I also quite often see tiny flies meandering through the air in my flat. Are these flies likely to be biting me? Photo inside. [more inside]

What was this young adult book with a protagonist called Veronica?

I once read a book where someone tells the main character, "You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar, Veronica." I'm 99% sure the character in question was called Veronica and the line definitely included her name. (It may not have included the "than vinegar" bit.) What was this book? [more inside]

What are these bugs and how do I kill them?

My hot pepper plant has gross little bugs on the undersides of some of its leaves since I brought it indoors for the winter last week. Pic 1, Pic 2. I also have little fruit flies (or gnats?) that I would like to kill that live in my aloe, mint, and sage. That funnel trick everyone recommends killed some but not nearly all. What can I spray on the plant and soil to get rid of the bugs and larvae without poisoning myself (when I eat the peppers/herbs) or the plants?

Shoo fly/come hither, fly

I believe that attractant-type insect traps like bug zappers, fly bags, CO2 traps et cetera work best if you put them in the vicinity but not too close - 15-20 feet. You want them to go "oooh, hey, what's that over there? Hey, everybody, this thing is over here!" My husband would wear a bug zapper around his neck like Flava Flav if that were feasible, on the principle that he wants all the bugs that come near him to go there instead. [more inside]

Bee/ Wasp/ Fly - Why Did You Have To Die?

Every now and then I find dead bees, wasps or flies in my living room - like on the floor, feet up in the air. I don't have a bee/ wasp/ fly problem - i.e. I never come home to a live bee/ wasp/ fly - so it makes me wonder why the ones that do get into my house mysteriously die, and always in the living room. Any ideas?

Nasty Landing

In between trash days -- Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday -- people in neighboring apartments deposit their trash on the first floor landing, outside the door to my apartment. I expected the super to put a stop to this practice but it turns out he condones it. I asked him to fix this and he said he'd try but I'm not sure he will. There are no trash cans or anything, just trash bags piled up. Is this against any NYC codes? How should I proceed?

flies, pets, etc

Question for the masses: We keep getting flies in our house, and have no idea where they’re coming from. All the windows are closed up tight, and we don’t have anything laying around for them to be feeding on and breeding in (food, feces, decaying bodies, etc), and yet I can go around a room and kill 4 or 5 and the occasional straggler in another room. Fly problem!

We have a small but persistent problem with flies in our house. Every other day we'll see one, maybe two. We can't figure it out! The house is kept very clean, there are no obscene smells such that would indicate a dead animal or something, there's no food left out. The flies are primarily in the kitchen. Any idea on a source or a solution?

A friend who lives in the country is trying to keep flies out of her cafe. She heard a rumor about an Amish technique where you can keep a clear bag of water over the entrance, and somehow the light refraction keeps them away. Sounds like an urban myth, but short of swatting or unsightly strips, does anyone have any ideas about how to conquer flies?

Carnivorous Plant - Is It Overeating?

Question for carnivorous plant aficionados: I have a Sundew plant (drosera adelae) that seems quite healthy. It catches a lot of fruit flies, but seems unable to actually digest them. Often, dead flies just sit on the Sundew's leaves until the fly bodies eventually mold from the humidity of the terrarium. Is the plant overeating?
