So let's say that, initially as a joke, you and your husband made a New Year's Resolution to become able to do
the splits. You are in your mid-30s, at healthy weights, and you both do moderate exercise almost every day (walking, light jogging, elliptical, what have you), but your flexibility is average. My questions are:

I'd like recommendations for books, sites, or online or downloadable videos for gentle yoga or similar exercises for increasing flexibility, that I can do at home, starting at rank-beginner level.

YANMD, I know, but my doctor hasn't been very helpful, so I figured I'd try asking the hivemind.

Where can I get the body workout without the soul workout - in Philadelphia? I'd like to find an exercise class that focuses on flexibility and reducing tension - without the spiritual stuff usually abundant in yoga classes.

What is the
fastest and
most effective way to get limber/flexible again? I'm middle-aged and was a life-long runner until I switched to bicycling about 5 years ago. Biking didn't do it for me so I'm running again and training for a 10K that's only a month away. I never had any flexibility problems before but now my hamstrings and butt muscles are very tight. My stride's a lot shorter than it used to be and I'm having some minor back pain and stiffness that might be related to my tightness.

I am looking for a web site or book that someone here can recommend detailing ALL major stretches for the hips and lower body that also shows anatomical diagrams of exactly what is being stretched by the stretches. I have seen some good stuff on the net, but i am looking for a complete list with anatomical diagrams. If it is only hips, thats OK too. Thank You.

I'm a (female, if it matters) beginning weightlifter trying to build lean muscle mass through exercise and a structured nutrition program. However, my progress has been stymied by my lack of flexibility and range of motion in my shoulders, hips, and legs, making proper form for squats and deadlifts very difficult. What are some exercises that I can do to correct this, and is there any hope that I'll ever be able to touch my toes?

Broken tibia & fibula, 3.5 months ago, clean snap. I got an intramedullary rod in the tibia, screws at the ankle and knee, and absolutely no recommendations for PT other than some exercises to do at home from the doctor. Everything else seems to have healed well enough, but - my big toe ain't movin', and it's stuck in permanent "up".
