Our TV, a stately Sony Trinitron that's served us since 1999, is dying. We need a new 42 inch-ish TV. I have no idea what to look for in this new flat/plasma/HD market. All I want to avoid is that godawful HD thing where old movies look like cheap soap operas and everything is too sharp and flat. No interest in a smart TV or 3D or anything like that. What should I buy to make our media diet of old movies and Netflix TV shows look the best?
I'm in the market for a new TV. A TV on BestBuy.com is actually sold through Buy.com, which is apparently the same thing as Rakuten.com. Is this situation weird? [more inside]

In our one-bedroom apartment, we have a pass-through window between our kitchen and living room. It would be the perfect spot for us to hang a flat-screen tv but the surface it would have to be mounted on is a piece of 1/4" plywood abutting the back side of our kitchen cabinets. Is it possible? Our TV is broken. Should we try to fix it, or would it make more sense to just buy a new TV? How much would a repair for our kind of problem cost? [more inside]

I'm looking for a nice, minimal way to elevate my flatscreen TV (38"). I like the shelf idea (like this), but want to make sure it's a sturdy option that won't rip out the drywall. Any experience with these? If not, any recommendation for a handsome TV stand? [more inside]

My current bedroom TV has decided it prefers to only do sound now. Not a big deal-it is old and was a hand-me-down. But, holymajoly, this TV buying thing is WAY more complicated than "I need a TV. OK, that one." [more inside]

Advice in making a spinning wall-mounted tv. I have this vision for mounting my 42" flat screen tv on a rotatable wall, so that you could push the wall in and the tv would rotate around into the other room. Kind of like the secret passages in cartoons where the whole fireplace turns around or something. I am finishing my basement so I am essentially starting from scratch. How could I do this? Re-arranging my office, and the power cord was too tight between monitor 1 and the plug, so I unplugged it and put it in a different plug. Now that monitor won't power on at all. I've tried different plugs, different power cables, and no good. The little light on the button doesn't even show yellow, much less green. Its an Acer AL 1916 monitor with VGA in. I can use another screen singly for now, but I'm worried that I've somehow killed my monitor, and I don't know what else to try. Thanks.

I'm looking to pick up a flat panel display, at least 20", and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations or opinions based on LCDs they own currently? What are the salient things to look for, particular to LCDs? I doubt I'll be using the flat panel much for 3D gaming, but I want something that won't artifact at all? I'm looking for something in the mid-range, price-wise, but obviously the cheaper, the better. Thanks.
