I'm looking for reasonably priced, low capacity, vegetable-shaped flash drives to use for holiday gifts. They will store a small PDF e-book and about fifty small .doc files of my recipe collection. I've seen... [more inside]

I have a nifty little USB thumbdrive that I want to use to make backups of various documents; it will live on the powered hub in my office, as I'll only need to use it in the office. It's something of a pain to unplug and re-insert every day, or every time I need to leave the desk with my laptop.
After ejecting, the drive is no loger visible using diskutil on the command line, tho I can see it in the system profiler. Is there a way to have the system recognize the device and mount it whenever the Macbook wakes from sleep? I've got sleepwatcher installed, but I'm not certain how to get the system to recognize the USB device without unplugging it and plugging it back in. Shutting down and restarting the mac every time I want to leave my desk with it is not a viable option, either.
I'm running 10.7.5 on a Core i7 15" MBP.

I've been asked by my employer to make a flash drive containing a self-contained slideshow with music (that he can give to prospective clients) that is both elegant and easy to open. It needs to work on both Mac and PC. [more inside]

Our corporate gifts this year are kind of new and unique, but now I'm concerned that some of the recipients won't understand what they are or how they work. How can I best explain it in a short included message, without being off-putting to the ones who have seen them before and know exactly what they are? [more inside]

Can I use a flash drive to transfer files from university computer labs to my home computer without picking up nasty malware? I will often need to work on a number of 25-30 MB spreadsheets, both at home and in university computer labs, and I'm inclined to use a flash drive to transport the files. Because of download quotas, Dropbox might not work too well for me. Can I transport the files via flash drive while maintaining a reasonable level of security? If you use a flash drive on common use computers often, what's your method? Have you had security issues in the past? Thank you.

I love Vista, hate the way it handles flash drives. Obi-Wan, Help Me!
I use a Vista laptop and an XP desktop for work. When I copy anything from the XP machine on my flash drive and use it on my Vista Laptop, it won't let me delete or re-save it after editing, saying the file is Read-Only.
Even if I copy something to it from the Vista machine it always asks to confirm things. I know UAC is a pain in the neck but is there anyway around it's behaviour on flashdrives?

My spiffy little USB flashdrive thingy is coming apart, coming loose from its plastic casing. The metal parallelepiped inside is easier to slip into my wallet and looks cooler, IMO, but I'm wondering what sort of damage all the plastic protected it from. Question:¿will it harm my USB flashdrive thingy to go about naked in the world?

Having had any chance of a steady internet connection from home lost for the time being, is there a kind of 2005-style offline reader software available that can download mail to a single file on a usb key, to load up and reply to at home outside of the time and money limits of a dingy internet cafe?
