Can anyone suggest a way to remove extra whitespaces from a string that exists in a Flash variable? [more inside] [more inside]

Does anyone have a good solution for copying files (say... image files) from a CDROM to a user's local disk using a Flash interface (and any appropriate add-on)? It should be cross-platform happy, and specifically able to be developed on the Mac.
