Going to Flagstaff for Christmas. What to do?

A couple of friends of mine and I are going to drive from Austin to Los Angeles for Christmas break. We will be stopping in Flagstaff, AZ on Christmas Eve. What could we do in Flagstaff on Christmas that would be awesome and memorable? My two friends are from Bosnia and the midwest and for some reason they want to go through the Southwest, so I want them to have a rippin good time. What are some places we can go to that would be open Christmas and are there any events in Flagstaff or Sedona that we can go to? Anonymous because the midwestern friend might be reading this.

Snow in Flagstaff in April?

We're thinking of visiting Flagstaff, Arizona in April... what is the danger of snow? My wife and I were thinking of traveling to the Flagstaff area to see canyons and pueblos. I have time blocked off for the week of April 20th. After doing some more research, it seems like it will be fairly cold there still due to the altitude. We'll be coming from Maine and seeing snow would be somewhat disheartening. Is there likely to be a lot of snow on the ground still, and will there be growing green things at that point, or are things still pretty dead?

If the latter, any suggestions for a warmer, more spring-y destination with a similar canyon/pueblo profile? Or will I have to resign myself to seeing such things another time?

How to make the most of a very brief trip to Arizona

I am looking for advice about places to stay and things to do on a trip through Phoenix, Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon and Sedona. My mom is going to be in Phoenix for a conference soon and since neither of us have spent much time out west we decided to make a little vacation out of it. Help us make the most of it! After two days on my own in Phoenix, on Sunday afternoon/evening we are going to drive to Flagstaff. Monday we will drive to the Grand Canyon for the day and then return to the same hotel in Flagstaff. On Tuesday we want to see Sedona on our way back to Phoenix. Tuesday night we will sleep somewhere in Phoenix (probably just close to the airport) and then Wednesday morning we will both fly home.

As these are the biggest areas where I lack knowledge, can anyone help us out with…

1) More than anything else, we are looking for suggestions for what to do in Sedona. With only one day, what would you do? I have read suggestions in previous threads but most of those askers had more time! We are mostly looking to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. Walking and light hiking would generally be our preferred activity.

2) Any suggestions on places to stay and things to do in Flagstaff and Phoenix? As it’ll be largely unused, we’d rather not spend much on our room, but we’re flexible on cost. Are any of the museums worthwhile? Any cool coffee shops or unique shopping districts? What about solo excursions, as I’ll have two days on my own while my mom is at her conference?

3) My mom injured her knee recently and while she is fine for all normal activity and even moderate hiking we certainly won’t be trying to make the trek down into the Grand Canyon. How can we make the most of our trip while mostly staying along the rim?

4) Also, as a bonus, my mom is a pescetarian and I rarely eat meat, so any suggestions for good vegetarian food in any of these locations will be greatly appreciated.

Have pack, will travel... to Flagstaff

Backpacking adventures near Flagstaff? So... I've been bitten with the wanderlust and want to get out backpacking for a weekend. I've got all the requisite gear, am in really good shape, etc... but have no idea where to go.

My ideal backpacking trip would take me somewhere cool -- like up to a lake or a great vista or something like that. Some kind of destination, at any rate. I'd like to hike in at least 5 miles, as anything less seems... well... pointless, but for something cool, I'm flexible. Off the beaten path, but... you know... not so off the beaten path that I can't go up just for a weekend from Phoenix.

I may (or may not) have my dog with me, so somewhere where that isn't a problem would be the best. I'm concerned not only with park regs, but also the availability of water -- hence, the interest in going to a lake or spring or something similar.

Any ideas?

Sedona/Flagstaff recommendations

Sedona/FlagstaffFilter - We're 2 1/2 weeks from honeymoon land, and heading to Sedona and Flagstaff for our honeymoon . . . We're driving, from Central Illinois, staying at a B&B in Sedona for two days, a spa (Mii Amo) for 3, and then over to Flagstaff at another B&B for another 2 days. While we won't have a LOT of spare time, is there anything you venerable MeFites recommend that we absolutely MUST see? We're pretty open to hiking, New Agey type stuff, any good veggie places, either there or along the drive. Bring it on!
