The US military follows a time honored tradition of retiring and destroying damaged US flags. That protocol is outlined in US Code, Title 4, Chapter 1 which (link) outlines the disposing of such flags in a manner that shows respect for the flag and the service it has provided. Yet, I frequently see people flying very damaged flags in very prominent locations. [more inside]
I live in a place where the confederate flag has sprouted recently, probably as a reactionary gesture. Is there a union flag I could wave that would be a historically appropriate response to this kind of passive racism? The 36 star assassination flag of Lincoln seems possible, but I could use other suggestions.
In the last year, I've noticed more people flying American flags from the beds of pickup trucks. I did some travelling earlier this month and also saw this in Arizona and Utah, but not in Washington DC. The reason for that geographic distinction might be obvious; a different demographic lives and works in the DC Metro area than Salt Lake, Tucson or Portland. But it reminds me of the couple of years right after 9-1-1, when people were flying little flags from their driver's windows. [more inside]
You know those houses with the seasonal nylon, decorative house flags? The ones with the puppies smelling flowers, or the spring tulip, or Santa in the winter and stacks of books with leaves in the fall that wave in the breeze outside of people's houses? I need some help finding some house flags... [more inside]
Could you point me to well-articulated discussions supporting the confederate flag? It's sounding like the statehouse flag in SC is likely to come down, but I'm interested to hear the voices on the other side of the issue, such as newspaper editorials or blog posts, especially current ones. Can you help me find examples of logos that pull elements from, are influenced by state flags?
I left a bag on a plane last night; thankfully it was taken by airline staff to the airport's Lost and Found office and I will pick it up tonight. In it (still) are my U.S. passport, an American Express card, and Visa debit cards from two different bank accts. This is a small airport in a remote Scandinavian town with an extremely low crime rate. No activity today on any of the cards. Still, do I need to put any sort of identity-theft flags on passport and/or on cards?

What is this cross-based symbol, as if from a coat of arms or a flag or banner? The image I've linked to is an approximate representation roughly drawn without skill from memory. The closest I've found is the flag of (the country) Georgia, but there are some differences: (1) Georgia's is a lighter red, (2) it's missing the end caps on the main cross, (3) its minor crosses have curves, and (4) it's overall elongated horizontally rather than squared.
My wife adores cabbages, and we both love Toronto and Cabbagetown. Last time we were there we didn't get a chance to grab a Cabbagetown flag, but we've always wanted one. I've been calling the Cabbagetown BIA at the phone number at this blog post, but they have not yet responded to my voicemails or emails. The latter link says you can pick them up at 237 Carlton Street. But I'm in NYC, not Toronto, and cannot get back to Canada anytime soon. How can I get one and have it shipped home? I'm more than happy to pay for it, the shipping, the customs, whatever.
I saw a poster showing a photo of a protest in Egypt. This image of an Egyptian flag was featured prominently. Why does it have numbers (0128648788) under the central bird motif? Is it a date? A phone number? The image is probably from an Al Jazeera website. The bird doesn't look quite like the official one, either. Is this the flag of some group other than the Egyptian state/
Do you know some long-wait presents? I am planning an anniversary gift, and I would like to show that I want to be with this person for a long time. I am interested in signing up for some long wait tours, experiences or gifts. I am thinking of things like the Canadian flag at parliament hill - a 25 year wait list, but anything >1 year is good.
