Painful knee joint: what is going on?

I have had a knee problem for two/three years now. If I sit with my right knee bent for a long period of time the joint starts to hurt, not much at first, but the pain can become quite uncomfortable after a while. If I fully extend my leg my knee joint clicks, just like when you crack your knuckles, and the pain goes away. What is up with my knee? [more inside]

Scary or normal? The eternal question

For the past few months, I've found it very hard to run. Slowing down (a lot) helped the problem out but it still pops up occasionally. Lately I've been wondering if it's my heart. And yes, I want you to listen to a long recitation of my symptoms and problems. [more inside]

Display fitbit steps/info on desktop or chrome toolbar?

There must be a simple way thru a desktop widget or chrome extension to display the step count (and perhaps other daily data) from my fitbit on my windows 7 desktop or my Google Chrome browser toolbar, but I can't seem to find it. Does anybody know how to do this? thank you so much!

That Clean ...Risky?! Chew

Was your fitbit a game changer...or not?

I'm really itching to buy a fitbit to help lose weight and get in better shape. I'm interested in hearing from people who got one. Was a fabulous gamechanger that totally whipped you into shape? Or just something that ended up in your junk drawer because it was too cumbersome? Also, is it reliable for women when clipped to the center of the bra between the cups? I don't want it to be visible.

Best timer app for "reps" -- Android

I am doing physical therapy exercises at home and need to time reps -- like 10 seconds to hold a stretch, then relax for 5 seconds, repeat 10 times. Another stretch: hold for 30 seconds, relax for 5 seconds, repeat 10 times. What's the best Android app for this? (by "best" I am including simple. I don't need a complicated app for weightlifters that's going to confuse me with all kinds of other information) Cheap = Best

How do I get fit while I get sick?

I want to get fit because it would help my health long-term, but exercising more than a gentle walk makes me sick short-term, so I am stuck. I have specific restrictions on what I can do because of stroke risks, and expect to continue to frequently fall ill. I would like new ideas and especially advice from others with chronic illnesses that fluctuate on how they handle exercise. [more inside]

Where do I find real people with quirky yet destructive obsessions?

I'm working on a project at work about "unique or unexpected obsessions" related to technology, competition, health and fitness, animals, hunting, gaming or anything that is non-sexual or substance-related. I'm especially interested in how these so-called obsessions/addictions have impacted the subjects' relationships, careers, finances, etc. Where do I find people with weird yet intense obsessions that affect their everyday lives? I feel like I could use some inspiration, so any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What does my body do with the water I drink?

What happens to the drinking water I swallow? All I know is that it goes down my throat to my stomach, and then my body does its thing. Can you go into greater detail for me? For example: What positive effects does the water I drink have on my mouth, my throat, my stomach and other parts of my body? How does the stomach process the water? Where does the water go after my stomach? How does what's in the water get from my stomach to the necessary parts of my body? What's in water that my body needs? What parts of my body benefit the most from the water I drink? Feel free to answer other relevant questions that I've overlooked.

Shopping for a Gym. What do I look for?

After a year of half-assed solo weight lifting. I've decided to take the green's advice and tie my fitness to a specific activity. I'm thinking of joining a rock climbing/crossfit gym in my area. What exercises can someone with cervical disc herniation (c3-c6) do?

After a nightmare MRI experience sometime in 2011 I found out that I have a cervical disc herniation on c3, c4, c5, c6. The pain was so severe that I was unable to move my neck to right side without feeling like I was going to pass out. Now that I've gotten my first coritsone shot and feel alive, I would love to work at gym on strentheting my cervical discs so I can beat this problem and avoid having to marry cortisone shots for the rest of my life. What are some excercise machines and workouts I can safely use to strengthen my neck without damaging it further? [more inside]

How does a 20 yr old healthyish student get back in shape without dying?

The fact I never liked the "traditional" forms of exercise never bothered me before. That is, until it recently dawned on me activities like going to the gym or running might be the only options I have left. But, with sensitive knees and shins from growing quickly and the residual effects of childhood asthma still occasionally inhibiting my ability to do cardio, these activities seem more foreign than ever. What kind of doctor for the whole body?

For the past few years I have been giving myself tendon injuries in quite a few of my joints... elbow's, knee's, and achilles mostly. I'm been slowly becoming more active for several years now, following an achilles injury that didn't quite heal up for 4 or 5 years. In my late 30's... I know, I'm shedding quite a bit of my invincibility at a steady rate now. As I said, I keep hurting myself. Mostly when I ramp-up the rigor, or try something slightly different at the gym. I have a pretty long and gentle warm-up and stretching routine, I don't think I really go for an increase too quickly, and only work out every other day or so... but various tendons disagree, at different times, and for different reasons. Based on the frequency and degree of pain/discomfort/etc, and how careful I am about not doing too much too quickly, I think frequency of injuries are out of the norm. Here's the nut of what I really want to know: What’s the best kind of doctor (already tried my GP) to see about this? It's hampering some of my hobbies and reasonable ambitions quite a lot, so I want to start finding more aggressive help/tests/advise. Who can help from a whole body perspective? Yes to yoga, and learning all kinds of stretches. Looking for more than a PT at this point. Thanks all!

Exercising with my pre-teen?

I'm a dad and my oldest - now a pre-teen, who this year started at high school - is always tired and hates exercise. She was very active when she was younger but pressures of long school hours and homework have squeezed all that out of the calendar. Given all that, what's the best way I can help her to stay as fit and healthy as possible? What has helped for your kids? [more inside]

Now that WeEndure is shutting down...

Now that WeEndure is going away, I need somewhere to track my exercise. There are a number of places that have biking and running, but not swimming. I'd prefer simpler to the more complex sites like MapMyRun (which, again, doesn't do swimming, from what I can see). I have seen this and wondered what things are out there, four years later. Give me my rewards

What things should people do that are in their best interest, but don't do either because of ignorance or lack of discipline. For example, if you have the discipline to pay every month, there is no reason not to use a rewards based credit card for all your purchases. Arguably, maxing your 401k is another example of this. So is exercise and sunscreen. What other smart behaviors and actions should we do, but don't because we don't know any better or don't have the will to do so. I will also take counter examples, e.g. stupid decisions / undisciplined behaviors / etc.
