What's wrong with my fish? I have a small orange fish. Not a goldfish, not a platy, but more than likely closely related to a platy. He normally has a narrow body, but for the past two days he's been very fat, his fins are "ruffled", and he's stressed, and hanging out at the bottom of the tank. I believe that he recently became a daddy and possibly feasted on his progeny.

We have a freshwater fish tank community of tetras, catfish, gouramis and loaches. The loaches are the most dynamic and entertaining addition to our tank, but the clown loaches disappeared last weekend! I found them last night all bunched up in the top of a hollow fake rock. They haven't been around much for the past week, and I'm worried that they are depressed or ill! None have died as far as I know, but they don't come out much. Should I evacuate them from their garage, or let them be? If evacuation is the answer, what would be the best way to do so?

How do I cook salmon on a cedar plank in the oven? I've googled, but there doesn't seem to be a consensus on whether to soak the plank in water or brush it with olive oil (or both), whether to oil before or after preheating, and so on. What's worked or not worked for you?

FishFilter: Earlier this week, the last of my original fish died. It was a
black skirt tetra, which is a fairly common aquarium fish. I have not, however, been able to find out how long they usually live, either on the Intarweb, Innes book, etc.

This weekend I intend to construct a
Custom Corrugated Vapor Colloid Applicator to smoke some fish. Now I've seen Alton Brown do this on my DVD of the show a dozen times, but I'm still a bit iffy about 1) not burning the house down 2) creating something non-food poisonalicious and 3) getting it done in time for a BBQ on Sunday. Any MeFi homemade smoker veterans have any tips for a beginner?

What's the best way to squeeze water out of a can of fish (i.e. tuna or salmon)? I've tried removing the lid and pressing it down hard into the can, but then it tends to get stuck, and I end up spending the next several minutes trying to dig it out with a knife. Thanks to everyone in advance.

There's a funny smell in our hallway. It smells like fish. Mainly fish, almost coppery, but definitely fish-like. Our hallway is not much wider than the door, and 4 or 5 feet long. There is an entrance to the attic, a radiator, a rug, and our phone in there. It's not the rug. It's not the radiator. It's not the attic. It's not the phone.

I watched
Episode 208 of Discoveries This Week on the Discovery Science Channel, and there was a short blurb about mercury levels in fish. They showed a web site with drop down boxes so you could enter in what fish you have been eating and come up with a figure for how much mercury you have been consuming. I didn't have anything to write on, and by the time I got home to the computer I couldn't recall the address. The Discovery site is useless and I'm not having any luck with Google. Did anyone catch it and go to the site they mentioned?

Can fish interbreed like dogs? My SO and I have been talking about dogs lately so the mixed-breed thing has been a regular topic of conversation. Last night we were at a Thai restaurant with a large fish tank and some gigantic fish. Too big for the tank, in my opinion. And that got me to wondering....can different kinds of fish, genetically speaking, be bred with each other? Even if they
wouldn't do it on their own (mating rituals, etc.),
could they do it with a scientists help?
