Hi everyone. This is a bit of a follow-up to my previous question
. So our second and final goldfish died today (don't think this one was ammonia poisoning, was fine last night and belly up-dead this morning). I want to take this opportunity to set up the tank properly and do better by the next fishies, because we weren't very prepared for these ones a few months ago, and sort of learned on the fly. I have a few questions. (Lots of detail inside because I don't want to forget anything.) [more inside]

I need a reliable heater for my 1 gallon bowl. I have a betta I'd like to keep warm this winter, but her water always seems to be too cold. I bought one of these Hydor Minis
a while ago, but it doesn't keep the water at a stable temperature. Any suggestions? [more inside]

Am I wrong to be annoyed? My girlfriend used my best wire strainer to rinse fish poop out of the gravel. [more inside]

I have a 20 gallon fishtank with three goldfish and one plecostamus. Everything's been great for over a year until yesterday. There was some water evaporation so I decided to add some plain tap water, a couple of gallons, maybe. I've done this before with no ill consequences.
Then I discovered that I had some Aqua Plus left, and poured in about 1/2 cup. It's always worked fine both in this tank and in my pond outside. However, this morning (the "morning after") my tank is completely cloudy!
The fish look okay but I just don't understand what's going on. The tap water was completely clear, and Aqua Plus is used to clear up cloudy tanks!
What could be going on here?? the fish are still looking good but the cloudy tank looks horrible.

I just rescued a couple of fancy goldfish, and I could use some advice on how to properly care for them. Is it normal for them to rest on the bottom of the tank? How much should I feed them? [more inside]

I want to get a small aquarium. What are the types of fish that are the cheapest and easiest -- read: low maintenance -- to take care of in terms of feeding, changing the water, etc, but at the same time, are pretty to look at? Any additional advice on tanks/filters is welcome too.

My aquarium filter, an aqua clear 500, makes a lot of humming noise. Do you know of a very quiet filter (maybe one of those external ones?), or do you have suggestions for making it less noisy?

Should I turn off the light in my aquarium overnight so my fish can "sleep"? Or is that just stupid? [more inside]
