Shiny music, Cap'n!

So, I'm running a Firefly/Serenity roleplaying game and I'm looking for recommendations for some suitable background music... ...of course I've bought the series and movie sountrack CDs, now I'm looking for some music that captures the spirit of the background.

I'm looking for something 'traditional Chinese' sounding, but maybe played on modern instruments, or with modern overtones/beats etc., and the same with something 'Border world Browncoat-ey' and 'Central planets Alliance-ey' (which might well be the Chinese sounds but other stuff too).

I'm not so much looking for songs/tunes *about* the series and characters but more the kind of music they might hear about the 'verse, in the bars/ports when they land to do crime and be bad guys!

Any suggestions would be shiny, thank you!

What a warm, loving family...

I'm looking for some films/TV shows that revolve around the concept of family, especially the "created family". I loved Buffy. I loved Angel. I really really loved Firefly. I also quite liked Six Feet Under. Fraiser was kind of interesting. But I hated the Soprano's.

What films or TV shows might I like, where the central theme is a group of disparate strangers being lumped together to form a cohesive unit - a "family"?

The outside details (being in a spaceship/fighting monsters/whatever) aren't vitally important. If the shows are available to rent on DVD (in the UK, though I figure that shouldn't be too much of an issue), that would be great too.

Losing my Serenity at home...

Why can't I access www.fireflyfans.net from my home PC? I just get a 'Internet Explorer (7) cannot display the webpage'. I can get it at work, so I know it's still there, just not at home. I'm on Virgin (ex-NTL) cable (going through a router), and I can get everywhere except this one site. And I *love* Firefly, dammit!

Chicago Movie/TV Fandoms (Buffy, Angel, Firefly, BSG, Trek, Gen Scifi)?

How can I get in touch with television and movie fandom in Chicago? I wanted to follow up on an earlier question of mine in which I asked for Chicago geek group activities/social events. Although I got a satisfactory bunch of answers, I thought I might expand on it a little more and see if I might get some additional pointers that weren't touched upon in the original question's answer.

Specifically, I'm wondering about Chicago geek culture as it centers around some television and movie fandoms — for example, Buffy, Angel, Firefly/Serenity, Battlestar Galactica (current series), and Trek — and/or general science fiction/fantasy fandom (such as those who like Asimov, Bradbury, etc.).

Essentially, if you think of the wide array of geekdom that you might find at a science fiction convention, that's the kind of groups and people I'd like to meet up with. (Similarly, if there's a website which offers a good, thorough listing of upcoming Chicago conventions, that'd be cool, too.)

(I'm interested in non-fandom Chicago socialization, too, but I've found good resources about that, including my own earlier question, this Ask Mefi question, and a few good Chicago resources (example). I'm just having some trouble digging stuff up on those particular areas. Although Meetup.Com has yielded some leads to follow, I'm thinking Ask Mefi's wisdom of the commons might yield some more reliable suggestions and or tips.

Website with DVD sales profits?

Does anyone know of a website that has recent, regularly updated info regarding sales of top-selling DVD's? I have recently gotten into the short-lived TV series Firefly and subsequent movie Serenity. From what I understand, the fate of any new episodes or movies are directly hinging on Serenity's DVD sales. Is there anywhere on the web where I can see not just the amount of DVD's sold, but the actual gross profit from the sales?

Best Firefly Episodes to See Before Serenity?

What 3 or 4 Firefly episodes would be considered required viewing to get the most out of Serenity?

My wife and I have gotten pulled into the Serenity/Firefly excitement, and we're looking forward to seeing the movie. In order to avoid being lost on backstory and character development, what 3 or 4 Firefly episodes would be considered required viewing to get the most out of Serenity?

We've seen (and really enjoyed) the pilot, and we'll probably go back and see them all eventually, but we only have time for a few more episodes before we see the movie next weekend. So, what should we see and in what order?

Why was Firefly cancelled?

Why was Joss Wheedon's Firefly series cancelled? I've tried searching, but there are so many damn sites that casually mention the series/cancellation/Serenity movie that it seemed wiser to ask here.

Twangy Olde timey westerny music

Having recently fallen in love with Firefly (the tv show) and playing Uru for a short bit I am quite interested in the musical styling of these two things. They both have the twangy floaty guitar.. But they definitely are not country and western.. What is this style of music called, and who should I listen to for more?
I have found 'Buck 65' who uses this style sometimes in a few of his songs.. Any Genre is apperciated.. As long as it has that waawaaa floaty guitar
