Funky Feeling Fingertip

Why does my fingertip feel so weird? I spent the weekend sanding and spray painting some patio furniture. I found that after a few passes with the spray can my right hand index finger would start to swell and hurt. Switching to my left hand helped, but now I'm having issues with the left hand's index fingertip. I wouldn't say that it is totally numb but feels closest to a pins-and-needles type sensation. It doesn't necessarily hurt, but the unusual sensitivity is annoying. My friend reassured me that it would be fine but two days have passed and nothing has changed. I just started a new job and my insurance won't kick in for 90 days. Any advice on what might have caused it and when or if it will get back to normal?

Treating a fingertip wound

Is it OK to leave some gauze stuck to a wound? My wife sliced the tip of her finger yesterday, nasty but not bad enough for an E.R. visit. Once we got the bleeding controlled, we wrapped her fingertip in a gauze bandage, with some polysporin, and taped it up.

This afternoon she tried to change the bandage, but it's stuck to the wound pretty good. She's averse to pain, so giving it a good yank is out of the question. We've tried soaking it in warm salt water, but even after a few hours of that nothing's coming loose.

Can we just trim off the excess and leave the gauze there? (The part that's stuck is probably a quarter inch, on the side of her fingertip.) Or is that going to mess up the healing? If it's better to remove it, is there anything beyond warm water that we can try?
