PromoteSafeVolunteeringFilter. I would like to start volunteering regularly at an AIDS hospice. My nails and cuticles are an ugly, bloody mess from a pretty bad nail-and-cuticle biting habit. It hasn't bothered me until now; but even with the double-layer of gloves I wear while doing the cleaning, the nuns who run the place have pointed out this is not a good situation for the patients or myself. I've just recently gotten my fingernails and cuticles under control, but don't know what I should be doing to maintain them. Can anyone recommend a particularly good manicure kit, and a brief description of how to use the manicure tools? Also taking suggestions for general fingernail care, cleaning, etc. (P.S. How do I stop myself from biting my fingernails? I'm in my twenties now and this habit is really injurious to my self-esteem (and probably my health, too). Every so often I'll remove so much that my fingers are sore for a few days and once or twice I've drawn blood. I can stop for up to about a week, but inevitably I succumb in a moment of distracted agitation, and the habit returns. (Answers amounting to "stop being nervous!" are not especially welcome.)

Recently I mangled up some of my fingernails doing manual labor. I've clipped and filed them as best I can, and now I'm just waiting for them to grow out a bit so I can clip off the jagged edges completely. Is there anything I can eat/drink to make my fingernails grow faster/stronger?

My fingernails are like magnets for dirt. Every day I have to clean out the crud that gets underneath them. While it isn't a hassle, how is it that a female with long nails is able to keep hers clean where I struggle to keep mine clean for more than 2 hours or so? Is there some fingernail gnome who just loves to keep my fingernails dirty? Is there an easy way for me to keep them clean for more than lets say half a day?

I want to grow claws. I was wondering if there is a way to cause one's fingernails to grow thicker and harder, into something one won't have to worry about breaking when fingerpicking one's guitar with them. Any suggestions? Is this even possible?
