Not satisfied with the dated icon used for the finder on my Mac, I did a little research and discovered a way to replace the icon using System>Library>CoreServices>Dock>Finder.png. I replaced the default PNG files with an updated version. They were labeled correctly as well (finder.png, firstname.lastname@example.org) but when I inputed the dock restart command in terminal, the space where the icon was supposed to be was totally empty!
What did I do wrong and what can I do to fix it? [more inside]

I'd like to use the color labels in finder more extensively to help manage files all over my computer, not just for certain areas. Because the labels are system wide the names don't always match the intentions for certain folders labels tend to be cumbersome and not clear in meaning. Areas that I would like labels to work well in are: Downloads, work project folders, Desktop, Archive folders and media folders. Labels that work for one area don't mesh with others. Have you been able to figure out some names for the color labels that are elegant and useful in every user folder in the filesystem? I'm not looking for a way to use spotlight comments or another program to handle this - I'm specifically interested a solid naming convention for elegant, useful color label names. Thanks!

I'm a PhD student and a typical day involves downloading and reading through lots of journal articles and eBooks. I store these locally on a MacBook. I am looking for something akin to the native Finder app, but which offers separate columns for "Author", "Title", "Year" and so on, as well as tags (very important). I have dabbled with Papers2 and Endnote, and a couple of "Finder"alternatives, but these either (A) duplicate the PDF files and save them elsewhere, or (B) don't offer the author/title/year etc. columns. Is there anything that will do what I'm looking for?

In Mountain Lion opening some (but seemingly not all) folders in "List" view, shows the "Date Modified" column on the left of the window, requiring me to scroll further left to see the "Name" column. What preference did I accidentally change?

Mac OS... I want a file I rename, that has the same name as another file, to automatically label it as 2nd, 3rd, etc. Windows does this automatically, but in the Finder it says I need to give the file another name. [more inside]

Ugh. The "list view" in Finder (Macbook OS X Lion 10.7.2) is no longer showing the collapsible triangle to the left. It only shows a triangle to the right, which isn't collapsible/expandable. What gives? [more inside]

I have a folder full of images -mostly jpeg but some RAW (I'm on a Mac, OS X 10.6.4)- that I exported from Aperture on an older machine. Like a fool, I grabbed all the jpegs in the Aperture vault in Finder and dragged them to a new folder, and now it turns out that I have several versions of each photograph. How do I find the largest/best version of each image and discard the rest? [more inside]

Buggy finder in OX 10.5.8
Recently my finder has gotten really buggy - even though I have disabled spaces and expose they will spontaneously launch. Also when I open folders in the finder they will flash repeatedly before stopping and letting me click into them. I also have a hard time renaming files by clicking into the file name on the finder.
Does anyone have any ideas??? Thanks!!

How do I permanently resize this window to a more normal size? I have a MacBook.

I use OSX Tiger, and I want (ideally) to see a sorted list (by size) of all files in a folder, including

of them on or below that level in the hierarchy. Any tips or shareware to help? [more inside]
