I'm on a project where I frequently need to compare two versions of bits of text (< 100 words) to find changes. I'd love an app or script where I can quickly paste version 1, then version 2, and be shown the changes, ideally in editor's markup (even better if it can ignore spacing/styling diffs). Sleek workflow (i.e. minimal # of actions) is essential. I'm on a Mac, but happy to use Terminal (especially if I can script the process). Any suggestions? Or should this be a MetaFilter Jobs proposal? [more inside]
I was listening to the song Monkey by Harry Belafonte. For a variety of reasons I need to get a fife like the one being played at the start of that song. Mainly for playing while I prance around my house. It is major keyed and very high pitched. Please help me find this fife. I'm ready to purchase this instrument and spend the rest of my life mastering it. [more inside]
How long does it take to find another job in another city? On average? I am currently living in Providence RI, but I want to move to Buffalo NY, and I want to secure a job in Buffalo first. How long would it take to find a new job in a new city that is many miles away?
I found this pair of shorts at a thrift stores years ago and absolutely love them. They are the most comfortable pair of shorts I have ever worn, and I have just about worn them out. I would very much appreciate any thoughts on how to find this specific design, material, and where to find/buy information you may have! Thanks in advance! [more inside]

I rely on Apple's Spotlight search to find files on my MacBook Pro, because I am so bad at organising stuff into folders. But recently, it hasn't been working. I look for a word I know is in the file contents – like a Word doc – and it simply doesn't show up in the Spotlight results. I've tried re-indexing Spotlight but it hasn't helped. [more inside]
I'm trying to track down a very unusual gate on a NYC sidewalk. (A friend posted a photo of it on Facebook, challenging us to find it ourselves — she won't give us any clues.) It's a brown, cast-iron gate, with a thick circle in the middle, and there are 11 single-dial combination locks (which look like this) irregularly spaced inside the circle. [more inside]

The fence between my neighbor's house and my house has been damaged by a tree on their side of the fence growing larger and starting to push the fence down. The fence is further weakened by the fact that my neighbor's dog (a very large German Shepherd) often jumps on it when she barks at things in my yard. For the safety of my family I want to get the fence replaced. I would like the owner of the next door property to pay for half. The problem is the property is a rental and the tenants wont give me the landlord's contact info. How can I find out who owns the property? [more inside]
My friend has this woven throw blanket with cats on it that she's had since she was a little kid (ie 1994 or so). It's getting sort of threadbare now and I would really like to find the exact same blanket and give it to her for Christmas this year, but I have no idea what kind of blanket it is nor do I know who might have made hers. I figure it's either super rare, or crazy ubiquitous, but "cat woven throw" yields weird results on Google. Better leads needed, please!

Looking for a song for our Wedding! I have tried the hum to identify sites, and googled like crazy with no luck. The song is new (2011) and "car commercial popular". It has no lyrics and sounds kind of like something Sigur Ros would do. I know this offers nothing, but it is like, "Ahhhh, ummmmm, aaaaaaa uuuuu". It heard it on the radio, an "alternative" station. Its starts slow and builds (all songs I guess), and is quite emotional. Men are doing the vocals, and my last little evidence is that on the movie, If a Tree Falls, toward the middle they play a short segment of a song that sounds identical to the band in question but not the song. I check every song on the credits but it is definitely not there. Thanks all!
Any Microsoft Word wizards interested in helping out with a little find/replace question? I have a document with hundreds of lines of text that begin like this: "101 0 Music player..... 102 0 The interim... 103 0 Beneath the..." I need to keep the first group of digits but remove that 0, so that the result looks like this: "101 Music player..... 102 The interim... 103 Beneath the..." One added dimension: that second digit is not always a 0; sometimes it's another digit. Any thoughts? Thanks!
Helping help a friend find an old blog. Here are the details she remembers: A guy. Blogging around 2000 - 2001. Posts were often confessional, inimate accounts of his torturous relationship with his girlfriend, who had some sort of eating disorder. He lived in San Francisco much of this time, but eventually moved to (possibly) NYC. The blog may have been called the Grey Square or the Grey Box. Not much to go on, but maybe it will ring a bell with someone?

how to find trustworthy and high quality tradesmen in England? In Particular in or close to Cambridgeshire UK. I've seen a few sites that purport to offer crowdsource reviews of tradesmen but they have a small number of tradesman and few if any reviews which means I can't place too much weight on them. Something like tripadvisor would be awesome as from experience I know that there are so many untrustworthy people doing these jobs.
