How do I find a financial planner or retirement advisor?

We need a financial planner in Los Angeles. Or an advisor, I don't know the difference. Difficulty level: poorly organized procrastinators. My husband will be retiring in 3-4 years. I don't reach retirement age for several years more, though I could take "early retirement" from my company next year. Between us we have 2 pensions, 2 401Ks, 2 health insurance plans, a bit in savings bonds and a tiny IRA. We have a house that will be paid off in 3 years. And we have a lot of things we want to do in retirement. We're doing reasonably well negotiating where we'd like to live and what kind of place, but we have no idea what we can afford and/or if I can afford to retire with him. [more inside]

Step by step guide to get our future married house in order?

We're getting hitched! Yay! I freak out about money, and I freak out that my fiancé doesn't freak out about money as much as I freak out. Is there a good step-by-step guide you'd recommend that we can go through together to make sure we're covering all of our bases for saving for retirement, saving for other stuff, and paying down debt?

Is this investing in my future or is this a stupid decision?

I've been offered to be hired where I have been a contractor. However, there is a health insurance issue that would cost me a lot of money for several months. But I would have a great retirement plan. I have nothing in savings and $100k I just consolidated in student loans, so this issue is just complicating things. [more inside]

Wanted: Savvy retirement advice for a struggling youth

If I live until retirement age, I don't want to be broke. I am 24 and I want to start saving for retirement now, but I’m unsure how to go about it. I’ve heard good things about Vanguard, but I’m looking for some personal anecdotes and solid advice on how to go about this. [more inside]

401k/Roth undisclosed "Forfeiture Fee" halves retirement rollover. Help!

I recently rolled over my old 401K and Roth accounts through an old employer and held by ADP. Throughout the process, I was told the only fee would be the $50 "account transfer fee". But when the checks arrived half of my money was missing! [more inside]

Who's the kid here?

My mom has what seems to be undiagnosed borderline personality disorder. For the last many years, she's burned bridges at work and let her self-loathing get the best of her, to the point that she's chronically unemployed, has alienated most of her friends, and has exhausted all her financial resources. She's hit rock bottom, with $0 in the bank and debts to pay. And she's turned to me for help, saying she doesn't know how to take care of herself. I'm 26. I'm struggling to pay back my own student loans. Please help me help my mom. This is in Canada. [more inside]

What's my best bet in moving a Rollover IRA to another bank/brokerage firm with my negative net worth?

I need to know what my options are for moving this thing, given that I have a negative net worth. Can I roll it into another brokerage-style Rollover IRA at a brokerage firm, not a bank, and avoid the money laundering law stuff? Or am I relegated to Bank IRAs until I'm out of school debt? Do I suck it up and take the $75/month hit until I can start depositing money again (I don't know when that will be), and hope that the investments make up the difference in the long run? I haven't lost as much as most in my portfolio, and I know I have time to make up the losses, the monthly fee just seems like an unnecessary loss I should be able to avoid. [more inside]

401K Emergency withdrawel?

A tax question. Our family has experienced a drop in income and an emergency (not medical). I have a 40 thousand dollar 401K retirement fund and want to get 16K out of it. Our family makes 91K gross with two dependents. What will be the tax hit on the 15 k from the retirement fund (so we won't be surprised at tax time). [more inside]
