Any advantage to IRA if I can't deduct contributions?

I'm taking a new job with a very small company that doesn't offer a 401k. My spouse's job does offer a 401k. Based on what I see on this page, with our income, we would not be able to deduct any contributions I make to an IRA, and we're not eligible for a Roth IRA. So what is my best retirement investment strategy? [more inside]

Should I invest in my state's 529 even though I might move in three years?

I have a question about 529 Savings Plans. Now that I have a little one, I'm looking to start investing in a 529. However, there is a better than decent chance that we'll move to a new state within the next three years. Should I invest in New York's Direct plan right away (which looks great - low expense and a nice amount to write off my taxes) even though I might lose future tax benefits in another state?

Macro investment correlation

Has there been an inverse relationship between the availability of exotic investment securities and levels of traditional bricks and mortar lending? This makes some intuitive sense to me but I don't know where to start in trying to support/verify. Does anyone know what some relevant indices might be?

CFA worth it for a role in Real Estate Investment?

CFA worth it for a role in Real Estate Investment? I was wondering if the CFA will be useful to me if I want to work in Real Estate Investment – starting probably with a Commercial Brokerage firm in their asset management department, which would involve buying and holding investment properties for their income as well as possible capital appreciation. Ultimately perhaps work for some kind of REIT. [more inside]

Investing while AUD is so strong?

What's a simple investment an Aussie can make, to make the most of the strength of the Australian dollar? Everyone seems to think the Aussie dollar is overvalued right now, and recommends investing overseas. I have no experience in such matters, but I do have a Commsec account. Is there an US indexed fund available to Australians that anyone could recommend? Or would you recommend something else? The simpler, the better; I really don't have much experience in this. I'm not going to invest too much, but I'd like to know what a conservative, minimum-fuss option might be. Thanks!

Looking for an investment library in New York

I'm trying to find the name and address of a library near Grand Central Station in New York that's geared toward investors/financial research. It's a small, private library not affiliated with the New York Public Library system. I know the library exists (or existed until recently), but I can't find anything online. The library may be affiliated with some sort of society for investment professionals or financial analysts. It's *not* the NYPL Science, Industry and Business Library.

Are Independent Financial Advisers worth it? (UK)

I'm in the UK. My wife has contacted an IFA. They want to charge us £270 for an initial meeting, which will be reduced by 77% if we proceed with a pension product (for me, self-employed) they recommend; or, they will produce a full report for us which will cost in excess of £1600. Are they getting money for old rope? How hard do they really work for this money? Are they worth seeing? We're not millionaires - we earn decent but unremarkable amounts, and that sort of fee would dent the savings we're trying to protect. What are your experiences?

You take the high load, I'll take the low load

My 401k retirement plan through the company I work for is managed by Fidelity Investments. I have read recently that a "high-load" mutual fund will often return poorer yields than a "low-load" or "no-load" mutual fund. How do I find out if my plan is high-load, low-load, or no-load?

how do I calculate my 401K return?

I've been scratching my head this whole morning, trying to figure out how my 401K is doing, my own account per se. The personalized rate of return on my statement takes into consideration other factors that don't really apply to me, and thus I think it's not a true indicator of my account performance.
I tried to find an MS Excel function to do this; so far, I have not had any luck. What I want to find out is the average return per week or per quarter given these known numbers on my statement:

1. a beginning balance in dollars (B)
2. an ending balance (E)
3. number of weeks contributed in this quarter (N)
4. weekly contribution amount (W)
5. total quarterly investment additions (W x N)

FYI, the contribution is made on a weekly basis for a same amount. It's 100% vested and is invested in one plan. What is the formula to calculate this weekly return? Thanks a lot.

Where do SEC fines go?

So Lucent got fined yesterday, to the tune of mamny millions of dollars, byt the SEC for the criminal euphemism of Account Irregularities.
Like other high profile SEC investigations, why do they always mention the fine, but never discuss where the funds go?
Are they used to offset the defrauded investor's losses? Or does the gov't turn the investor's loss into it's gain by keeping the fine for its own purposes?
