Does a movie studio releasing many, many different video formats (multiple SDVDs, HD DVD, UMD, VOD) of a particular movie indicate that this movie performs well at retail? Or is it more likely a desperate attempt to recoup from a disastrous theatrical run?

Help me identify this short film. A man was having dinner in a big table when he notices the figure of an old lady through the shadows of the room next to where he was eating. Although there were more people with him he was the only one that saw her. When he finished he asks one of the servants if there was an old woman working in the house. He is told that indeed there was a lady with his description but that she had died earlier that day.

Windows Media Player and Center in Vista suck at subtitles for the old b&w foreign flicks I watch. Subtitles are white and get washed out when the picture is white. Is there a hack or some other media player which will render the subtitles better (outlined or in yellow). (FYI: subtitles for these films show up great on my Sony DVD player.)

I often download documentaries, and generally love them, and frequently feel like I want to give back to the director.
Monetarily-wise, that is, as perhaps I didn't pay for them.
What do you think of a service that allowed for paypal or such donation to individual directors? Could it work?
Alternately, directors of small films could set up a link on their websites, and one could spread the idea memetically.
I'm not looking to cash in on this, just to get feedback on an idea of how to assuage my guilt and help support those who make films worthy of support.

I want to start a log of films I see, to include director, lead actors, genre, date viewed, etc, and my own review of the flick. This is for my own use only. Can anyone offer a recommendation for software to use/how to set it up in something standard like Excel so that I can search on any category but still have somewhat extensive space for my eloquent prose? Might also extend its use to books and music. I'm a mac user.
Thanks!

Are We Done Yet? was the sequel to an original film, but was weirdly also a remake of the classic Cary Grant comedy Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House. Along the same lines, Ocean's Twelve was based on an unrelated script first intended as a John Woo project. Can we think of any other examples of a sequel to an original movie starting life as an unconnected film?

I show movies to assisted living residents at a retirement community. Movies over 90 minutes tend to be too long. I need a list of quality movies (made before 1970) that are 90 minutes long or less. Any suggestions of movies or where to find such a list?

Is there a site that will enable me to compile a list of movies I want to see and notify me if any of them show in a configurable fairly wide area? Yahoo Movies lets me build a to-see list, but I have to laboriously plug in a bunch of zip codes for each film (because its range is very narrow). For example, I've only seen LOTR on DVD, and every once in a while a theater revives them as a special thing and I miss it. And, just generally, I'm interested in obscure indie flicks that release only sporadically, and I lack the patience to search each title every few days. Now.....if there were such a site that could do the above plus track showings of my top-predicted films at MOVIELENS, that'd be great (but way too much to hope for). FYI, movielens (movielens.umn.edu) is an awesome groupware prediction engine.

A few years ago I saw a movie that I now remember vaguely but vividly. It was sort of an arty drama, and it might have been European. The story concerned a man and a woman vacationing(?) in a house near a beach. The man was in some sort of psychological distress, eventually culminating in some bloody self-mutilation. The title may have referenced Salinger's "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" in some way, but I could be misremembering.
