I'd like to get some good mystery movie recommendations from the 80s on.
It's OK if they veer toward the thriller, like
Michael Clayton, ridiculous like
Ford Fairlaine, noirish like
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, or are a more standard outing with a strong, interesting, well developed detective lead like
Zero Effect. Drawing room mysteries totally A-OK too. Super bonus points if I can stream them now on Hulu plus or Netflix.

Several friends and myself were sitting around draining the worlds supply of beer at the end of last summer, and decided to cap off the night by flipping on netflix. We ended up appointing someone to just pick a completely random movie just by the cover after a bit of arguing of what to watch... The trouble is, now none of us can remember what it was called.

I've never been to a film festival, but I'm really curious about AFI Fest since I'm taking steps to move to Los Angeles in the next five years and I don't really travel (so I can't go to bigger, similar festivals like TIFF or NYFF). How much do the tickets cost? Do you have to buy a different ticket for each screening? I'm curious how much money I should budget if I want to attend.

A good friend of a friend completed production of an independent film earlier this year. They've submitted it to festivals and are just waiting to hear back now. Does anyone have some stats on how much revenue a typical independently-produced film can hope to make in the US and how much the most popular ones make? How do indie filmmakers actually make money?

I'm pretty agnostic about 3D and IMAX both. But some films really should be seen 3D (e.g. Avatar) and/or IMAX (e.g. Dark Knight).
So...if I view Avengers 2D and/or in non-IMAX, will I be missing out? Each option limits my field of showtime options (and increases expense)...

Does anyone know where to download any of these Chinese sensationalist pseudo-documentaries made of 9/11 that mix real news footage with clips from blockbuster films? They freely mix fact and fiction, using news footage and illegal clips from Hollywood films. There were three made, with the titles: 1) "The Century's Greatest Catastrophe" (I've also seen it called The Century's Great Catastrophe") and 2) "Surprise Attack on America" and 3) "America's Disaster: The Pearl Harbor of the Twenty-First Century"--all made in 2001. There is a report on them in an article that was in the
New Yorker. Also mention of them made
here. Since they are illegal mash-ups of existing source material, I don't mind if I have to download them from 'questionable' sites. But I'd really like to consult these films for a study I am writing, and would appreciate any pointers as to where to find them.

I just watched Poltergeist, which I am now thinking seems right-wing, almost Catholic. at the end of the movie, the husband kicks the tv out of the room and serene music plays. is this a common feature of the movies of the time? did people kick the tv out of the room a lot in the movies of the 80s?

Another "What is this movie?" question. A girl or young woman can't eat her kipper at the family breakfast table, so it is brought out for her lunch, dinner and so on until eventually the cat eats it. It later turns out that the reason she couldn't stomach it was that she was pregnant. 1970s or pre-1970s film; John Mills may have been in it.

After a recent trip to Walt Disney World in Florida and inspired by the Main Street USA part of the park, I'm suddenly urged to immerse myself in films set in the early 20th century, preferably made in the 50s/60s/70s. The big one that comes to mind is The Music Man, but can anyone help me find any others? Disney flicks are a plus!

I'm in the mood for films set in days-gone-by at grand country estates, particularly those that center around (or at least include scenes of) large groups of guests. Examples that immediately spring to mind (and which I loved) include
Gosford Park,
The Remains of the Day,
La Règle du Jeu, etc. I ring the bell for the butler and ask for more!
