What proportion of a film should I watch before giving up on it?

I read a lot of books and watch a lot of films. With books, I give them a chapter to draw me in, and if it's not happening, I move on to the next one. But what's a good rule of thumb for films? [more inside]

Ways To Help People in Need with Writing or Film Skills?

St. Louis friend trained as a writer and filmmaker wants to use his skills to help people in need/suffering. Does anyone in the area (the city, or St. Louis County) know of any volunteering options for him? He already has an office job, but career suggestions would be welcome, though I think volunteering is more of an immediate interest. National and local organizations anyone knows of in the area are welcome. Thanks!

Perfect magazines for me?

I'd like to find some magazines to subscribe to that deal with road cycling, fixed gear (including track) cycling, and filmmaking! I'm particularly interested in magazines that feature strong design (so don't just think FilmMaker Magazine, more like Little White Lies). This will not just be for my enjoyment, but they will live in my edit suite for advertising creatives to flip through during long edit days.

Seeking inspiration

But it just looks so shiny

I need a new phone. I also want to start getting into filmmaking. I happened to stumble across the Nokia 808 Pureview, which looks like it covers both criteria, and is pretty awesome to boot! But my more tech-savvy friend said that the phone itself wasn't great, and I might as well get a separate phone and camera. You may assume (quite rightly) that I have next to no knowledge of technology. Please advise this total noob on what to get :) [more inside]

What's the economic return like for indie films?

A good friend of a friend completed production of an independent film earlier this year. They've submitted it to festivals and are just waiting to hear back now. Does anyone have some stats on how much revenue a typical independently-produced film can hope to make in the US and how much the most popular ones make? How do indie filmmakers actually make money? We ain't got no budget!

CHALLENGE TIME! You are lent some expensive, professional grade video equipment for 18 hours and told that you may use it as you see fit in the time you have. Assuming little to no preparation beforehand, what do you do and/or film with it? Ideally you'd like the owner (or anyone else who sees your work) to be mildly impressed, knowing that you have no actual solo film making experience whatsoever. [more inside]

Creating an internship for a small-budget documentary

Will granting permission for an amateur film of my story mean giving up my film rights forever?

I've just found out second-hand that someone is planning on making a film out of one of my short stories. Which is fine, I suppose, presuming he actually does ask my permission, and presuming it's strictly an amateur not-for-profit film. My question is -- if I do give my permission, will that harm any rights I have to the story? Suppose I wanted to sell the rights to a "real" movie of the story someday -- will giving my permission here mean I've given up the film rights entirely?
