Recommend me a film with a theme centering around a social justice issue. Preferably fictitious, or at least not a documentary (sorry Michael Moore fans). I realize that "social justice" is a loosely-defined term; basically, if the screenwriter is trying to make a point about a social justice issue, it's fair game. A few years ago I saw a movie that I now remember vaguely but vividly. It was sort of an arty drama, and it might have been European. I'm wondering about the business end of short films. How do they make money? A no-budget, 5-minute short is one thing, but many shorts have high production values, location shoots, CGI, etc., which can come to a substantial amount. For example the Academy Awards for Best Short nominees all seem to be (I didn't see em) at least (stab in the dark here) $10,000 and way up.
Unlike features (even really crappy ones), shorts aren't shown in theaters or on video and I've never really seen them outside a shorts festival. Are the producers of these taking a loss? Is it merely a kind of marketing for a director/production company and a loss is the norm?

I have been scouring the web for a way to get easily-available local-area movie schedules via RSS. Yahoo, Google, and IMDB all present perfectly decent HTML of this information, and there is one My Yahoo to RSS service; sadly, it's ad hoc and frequently fails to set the localization cookie. I went to see a foreign film yesterday and was dismayed that the subtitles were in white. Isn't it a proven fact that subtitles show up better when in yellow? Also, why are subtitles in a sans serif font? I read something sometime ago that printed text should be in a serif font because it's easier on the eyes. Something about the serif thingies allowing your eyes to flow from letter to letter easier than a sans serif font.

Is there a place on the internet where movies are remixed, like the JarJarBeGone remix of _A Phantom Menace_, ostensibly to improve them (as opposed to simply shortening them)?
I can think of a number of films that would have been better with a little editing, a few flat spots taken out, etc. and I was just wondering if this has started to happen in an online community. I guess one example would be the 30-minute version of Planet of the Apes.
Of course, I wish someone had done the same thing with Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle. Not a reader's digest condensed version, but perhaps an e-book that would warn me when a particularly long passage had no immediated relevance to the plot progression so I could come back to it later, perhaps. After almost 3,000 pages I'm exhausted!
I just like the idea of these sorts of remixes floating about but haven't found too many.

It's obscure-songs-from-French-movies time! The film "Cléo de 5 à 7" has a haunting tune sung by Cleo about halfway through called "Without You", which I cannot elaborate on much further except that some of the lyrics are about an empty house and (I think) the wind blowing through it. Since the soundtrack does not seem to exist any longer, is there any way I can get my hands on it anymore? Has someone in subsequent years covered it?

A number of years ago (8? 10?) there was a relatively low budget movie version of The Fantastic Four made, only to be bought up, and never shown the light of day, awaiting a big-budget production in the future.
Has anyone stumbled across information of this aborted project, and does anyone know where some video of it exists (in a digital format)?

Where do I find English subtitle files for non-English films? If I have a Divx/xvid/whatever I can play a subtitle file along with it. This I already know. What I don't know is a good site to find these files. Any help?

MovieFilter? - When a film shows a couple kissing, she often lifts her left leg up to make a right angle at the knee. Why? Does anyone actually do this in real life? Part of me expects it originally had some kind of euphamistic purpose, but my limited googling skills tell me nothing. Thoughts?

Triplets of Belleville. I recently bought it and have not watched it yet. My brother is coming this weekend with his two daughters aged 5 and 8. They normally like Shreck and Nemo. Is this film appropriate recommendation for a family viewing? I don't want to the be a dirty uncle.

On the movie version of Pink Floyd's The Wall, there's a short instrumental piece before "In The Flesh" (I think), with a guitar and flute, the guitar part starts something like this:

I just finished watching David Lynch's Mulholland Drive, and I'm stumped. Can someone explain to me what that was all about?
I should add that I'm not a huge DL fan - I don't enjoy strangeness for strangeness' sake - but didn't expect to be so utterly left in the dark. Anyone?
