What is the earliest generally-accepted use in commercial cinema of the following three shots: a lens-based zoom, in or out; a traveling shot using a dolly to follow a scene's protagonist (as in moving from room to room laterally); and a traveling shot using a dolly to effectively create a zoom, in which the framing of the protagonist becomes tighter as a result of a shorter distance to the subject? Recommend me a film with a theme centering around a social justice issue. Preferably fictitious, or at least not a documentary (sorry Michael Moore fans). I realize that "social justice" is a loosely-defined term; basically, if the screenwriter is trying to make a point about a social justice issue, it's fair game. An archetypal example would be The Constant Gardener, but also acceptable would be movies along the lines of American History X, Crash, Children of Men or Gattaca. Thanks, green!

In light of the horrendously awful "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry," are there any GOOD (i.e. both funny and non-homophobic) comedies about straight people either having to pretend they're gay or, more generally, about straight people slowly but surely letting go of their prejudices towards LGBT people? Having exhausted the English-language scene, I'm wondering what foreign directors have catalogs worth going through. I've already taken a look at the works of Pedro Almodovar and Wong Kar Wai, and would love to know who else has earned the respect of Mefi cinephiles. Limit your answer to directors whose catalog is in bulk created after 1970, please.

Another lost movie. Last seen 1973 in Europe, presumably made that year or slightly earlier (it may never have reached America). Setting: Britain (mostly London?) Pre WWI and just after. Cast: Attractive, British, youthful. No big names that I recall. General themes: I think- women's rights, problems of romance & politics, the pity of war. Two scenes vividly remembered: Young man appreciatively watching a woman on stage, she singing con brio "Votes for women, votes for women, la de da de da da dee!" Final scene young woman sitting in an art gallery post WW1 watching with emotion some "modern" art. I think her young man has died in the war. Scenes less well remembered (VERY POSSIBLY misremembered) generic love scene, generic romantic argument, suffragettes being run in by the police, young man getting a fleeing suffragette out of the way. A UK production, more art house than mass release, but wonderful atmosphere, which is probably why it sticks in my mind all these years later.

Two directors whose work I greatly admire, François Girard and Whit Stillman, have been MIA for quite some time. Can someone tell me where either has been, what they've been doing since their last films and what their future plans are? I've heard whispers and seen snippets online, but am hoping some industry-savvy MeFi-ite can provide something more substantial. Is this a case of lack of profitability completely trumping quality and forcing these two out of the director's chair?

Film Double Bill Suggestions. I'm putting together a season of double bills of great films. The double bills could be linked by actor, director, cinematographer, editor or genre, or they could be linked thematically - 2 films about childhood/set on a runaway train/sharing a common influence and so on. Anything goes, although both films must appeal to a broad audience, and should be generally recognisable as 'classics' of their type. What 2 films have you always wanted to see together?

It's obscure-songs-from-French-movies time! The film "Cléo de 5 à 7" has a haunting tune sung by Cleo about halfway through called "Without You", which I cannot elaborate on much further except that some of the lyrics are about an empty house and (I think) the wind blowing through it. Since the soundtrack does not seem to exist any longer, is there any way I can get my hands on it anymore? Has someone in subsequent years covered it?

A number of years ago (8? 10?) there was a relatively low budget movie version of The Fantastic Four made, only to be bought up, and never shown the light of day, awaiting a big-budget production in the future.

Has anyone stumbled across information of this aborted project, and does anyone know where some video of it exists (in a digital format)?

MovieFilter? - When a film shows a couple kissing, she often lifts her left leg up to make a right angle at the knee. Why? Does anyone actually do this in real life? Part of me expects it originally had some kind of euphamistic purpose, but my limited googling skills tell me nothing. Thoughts?
