I currently have a tangle of external drives hooked to my HTPC. Serving that stuff via UPnP is
okay, but I'd like to move my files to a separate device that would then be able to make them available to a motley assortment of devices. Thing is, I'm woefully ignorant about networking and file sharing, having never so much as set up a shared Windows folder. I need help coming up with a game plan.

Looking for suggestions and recommendations for a way to share files with customers, contractors and satellite offices.
I inherited an old website from 2007 that is used to post creative assets such as AI and PSD files for download. Posting new items is a manual process, requiring us to make thumbnails and manually adding links to the files.

There are all types of ways to collaborate on files at work. Our school has the typical networked file share, but it seems that sort of thing is going the way of the dodo. We can't support something like Dropbox since our internet pipe is too small. And something like Google Docs only works for a subset of what we do. What sort of file sharing/collaborating/check in systems do you like? What could you see working for a business or school?

I'm a college student looking for a way for to pool essays with 20-30 of my classmates in preparation for finals. We've tried emailing, but it got unwieldy very quickly. Are there any good sites/easy to use cloud-based services out there which might fit the bill? I've looked at Dropbox but would prefer a method where we don't have to download specific software.

I am a somewhat tech-literate adult wishing to share some video of my son with my non tech-literate mom. I've looked at vimeo and dropbox and had no success with either. Vimeo had a "problem" uploading my 3 minute video, and dropbox adds it to my desktop folder, but when I go to dropbox.com it says the folder is empty. Should I keep trying with one of these programs, or is there an easier way for me to upload and for her to watch?
Thank you, all.

I need to send an MP3 music file to a number of email addresses. I want to do this by directing people to a download on a web link, rather than emailing the (large) file direct.
I also want to be able to password-protect the file in that link (either the file or the link), so the music doesn't get passed around beyond the list of recipients.
Does anyone know of any good resources for this?
Thanks, oh wise ones.

I'm looking for a good way to share files with my clients that average about 20-25 MB each. While I've seen a number of (excellent) recommendations, like
drop.io, I haven't been able to find one with this feature:
Tracking which people download the file. I'd be okay if users had to create accounts, or if it was tracked by click-through from email links. But it must be private and allow user tracking.

I'm looking at an efficient way to distribute large files to multiple computers over my lan, I need to know how to do this and whats involved. I was thinking that since I have a dedicated server in my home that hosting the files via private lan'd bit torrent would be the weapon of choice as the file transfer speed increases exponentially.
My server is running a version of ubuntu so whatever software I will need must run in ubuntu. The clients downloading the files will probably be running windows boxes so Utorrent can be used and would be preferred. Are there any specific things that I need to turn on in Utorrent to do this via lan or will it essentially be seamless as long as the tracker is my server?
