How do I add a single piece of data to a list of Filemaker entries (1500 out of 4500)? I do not want to replace data, just add. [more inside]

I'm using Filemaker Pro 5.5 and one of the fields is locked, so to speak. It's supposed to have several possible entries/terms but only one pops up when you click on it. I therefore can't search for records with any other terms. Any ideas how to fix this?
