I inherited a bunch of text files that correspond to e-mails, probably generated using Pine or a variant. I know nothing about Pine. More inside! [more inside]

Is there an app that will take a set of files in one folder (wildcarded) and find probably references to those files within the text of the files within the same, or another folder (recursively)?
Although I could probably write this app fairly quickly, I don't want to reinvent the wheel if I can help it.

My Macs have decided suddenly to merge the information on two kinds of files into a single file listing. As I use separate programs for these, switching back and forth is really not an option, and manually setting things is going to eventually drive me crazy. Help! [more inside]

Is there a program or set of tools, preferably free / open source, that can take a video file as input, analyze the video, and output the parts of the video which contain motion above some threshold? The output could either be a video file or a series of still images.

I have a HP Pavilion dv6700 (dv6780se) laptop which i recently upgraded to Windows 7 pro via a free copy from the msdn alliance. I am currently running 3 gigs of physical RAM in 2 slots. I recently read an article suggesting a change to the virtual memory paging file size. From what i gathered you should or can increase the size by multiplying the current amount times 1.5.
This would change my total virtual memory to 4605, is this wise?
Should i leave it on the save hard drive has my OS or move it to a partition or separate external hard drive?
I've also read that readyboost can increase performance... is this still quite debatable for Windows 7 and am I already pushing the limits of my RAM and virtual memory?

Can someone please tell me how to find the size of my iPhoto and iTunes files? I go into Library, find iPhoto and iTunes and then find bunch of subfiles, divided by date; but they don't seem to include all the pictures and songs. It doesn't make sense and Apple documentation doesn't clarify the matter.

My team and I are writing a computer application for which aspects of the file format are very likely to change in future releases. The format is in XML. Does anyone know any resources on the web that lays down general principles about how to make a file format that is as extensible as possible for the future (and minimizes the possibility of cross-version breakage)?

I have a MacBook Pro running Leopard. It has two admin accounts. Some time ago I stopped using account "A" in favor of new account "B" (the reason behind the creation of account B isn't relevant to this question, however). If I delete user account "A," what precautions must I take to ensure the preservation of the files created under "user A," and what automatically happens to the ownership of those files?
