What's reasonable to expect men to understand about women's experiences?

Specifically if a man identifies as feminist, should he then understand why a woman would take stories of sexism against other women personally? An ongoing source of conflict with a man in my life is that we'll discuss something sexist happening in the world and when I want a moment of commiseration about it like "man, that sucks, what a shitty world, I'm sorry" he won't give it and doesn't understand why I take it personally unless it is something that personally happens to me. Cognitive Bias Hiding Sexism

I recall reading in Overwhelmed by Brigid Schulte about a study in which participants were asked to evaluate how much men and women talked during a discussion. It demonstrated that while both men and women talked equal amounts during the discussion, evaluators thought women talked more. Am I imagining this, or can someone point me to the study? I would also welcome other research in the same vein - cognitive bias that causes people to not see the effects of privilege.

How to convince him that women are still not equal?

A little while ago I showed my boyfriend, who has sometimes infuriating views about women, this College Humor video about women's hymens. After watching this, he said that the video was sexist towards men. Why am I so angry, and is that a fair assessment? And how to defend feminist positions more cogently than I presently do? am I sexist for wanting a lady cleaner?

I have employed a cleaner on and off or the last few years, but am now at a stage where I'm deciding to commit to a fortnightly clean as work responsibilities ramp up. The cleaning agency I use has sent me a male cleaner to be my new regular, the first I've ever encountered. I am having a strange reaction that I'm trying to reconcile myself with and need a little help to differentiate the crazies. Details after the jump... [more inside]

What professions started out female-dominated, were taken over by men?

I'm looking for more examples of professions like programming that started out as "women's jobs" but were later taken over by men, when they realized the work had potential to be prestigious. Mothers cooking for their families vs mostly male pro chefs is another one, though probably harder to place historically. I'm sure there are more examples. Do you know any, with sources if possible?

When is it legal to discriminate by sex/gender in job postings?

A mailing list I'm in has received a job posting calling for a male journalist. The justification for the gender is that it's a tv channel for financial news, and the reporters will be reading stuff all day, so they want to have a man and a woman alternate reading stories, and they have already hired the woman. Feminist basics for dads?

I'd like to get some recommendations on the basics of feminism, especially as it might relate to things a dad can do to help his daughters prepare for and deal with sexism in society and also do his part in understanding the world and making it a better place for women (and by extension all people). Anyone else have a sexist mom?

Looking for recommended feminist reading as well as personal anecdotes towards helpful dialogue with Mom, and to examine and deal with the crazy, effed up, sexist ideas with which I was raised and may have accepted as normal and true. [more inside]

Wait, I'll take the blue pill!

Within the last year, I've come to consider myself a feminist. I haven't felt this impassioned by anything in a long time. But my new perspective doesn't mesh well with coworkers and friends, and I'm constantly aware of things that never used to bother me. How can I cope with the frustration? [more inside]
