NSF GRFP Proposal

Where can I find examples of science/engineering research proposals for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program? I'm currently applying for the NSF GRFP and I'd like some examples of how a research proposal should look for the application. I've written a number of grant proposals for my thesis project already, so I'd like to take those and modify them to fit this application.

Fellowship Finance

I recently started graduate school supported by a National Science Foundation IGERT Fellowship and I just received my first paycheck--without any taxes taken out of it. Am I exempt from paying tax (state and federal) on my fellowship stipend because it's from the government? I claimed two allowances on my W-4 and I don't think I would be subject to witholding because my income is so low. Another fellow's tax accountant said the fellowship was exempt, but I'd like another opinion. I want to be sure that I'm not going to get stuck with a large bill next April that I'm unprepared for. Thanks!

Youth Passions Research in Montreal

If you had one year to dedicate yourself to researching how young people's passions and interests can be supported and encouraged, what would you do? Bonus points for Montreal-related responses. I'm planning to apply to the Sauve Scholars program, a one-year fellowship based in McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where you are given full support and resources to research, study, and work on a project of your choice. I would like to use the year to come up with a project plan for resources that help young people find support for their passions and interests - mainly from a Malaysian perspective, as there's nothing there, but involving research into how young people are supported in other countries.

We need to come up with a plan for our project - what we want to investigate, how we're going to go about it, how we can use local resources to help us. With a topic like this, it can be pretty broad, so I'd like some ideas for actions I can take to support my research for this one year.

What sort of research would you do? Who would you want to look up? Where would you volunteer or work? I don't expect specific names (Though that'd be great!!) but things like "You should look up what their relevant youth policy is and find government agencies that work with young people" or "Find a Malaysian Students Society to interview" are the things I'm after. If you've worked in a venture that does exactly this (support young people's passions), what sort of work did you do to form and maintain your venture?

I've been getting a lot of "ask the young people themselves", which is what I'm doing too, but that's not something I need the fellowship to do. I'm more interested in finding out what resources are available in Montreal/McGill that I can tap into.

Interesting Non-Academic Fellowships

What are some interesting non-academic fellowships out there? Some examples of what I mean:

Sauve Scholars
Pop!Tech Social Innovation Fellows
Ashoka
Echoing Green
TED Conference Fellows
YouthActionNet Global Fellowship
YSEI Fellows

So essentially they give you money and support for your projects, or for attending an event of theirs, but the focus isn't on academia and is generally open to a wider selection of people (compared to traditional fellowships that are geared towards academics). What other terms do they use to describe themselves?

(the examples I used up there are largely youth-oriented, but other focus areas are more than welcome.)

"Fellowship": What Am I Missing (Besides Christian Salvation, I Guess)?

I'm Jewish, so at least I've got a good explanation for why this baffles me so much.

I'm trying to figure out what Christians (particularly the Evangelical variety) mean when they use the word "fellowship". Sometimes it seems as though the word is simply being used as follows its dictionary definition of amity, friendliness, togetherness, commonality, etc.

But I'm increasingly hearing Christians use it as an intransitive verb, which puzzles me to no end. What could it possibly mean "to fellowship"?

My dictionary also indicates that the word can refer to communion (uncapitalized, so I had assumed that just meant a secular kind of togetherness) - does "fellowship" mean to take Communion together? Or does it just refer to hanging out with other Christians?

Anyone out there who can cast some light on this for a poor benighted Jew?

How do I get funding for summer history research?

How do I get an undergraduate summer research grant in history? I want to spend my summer working on my senior thesis without going completely broke. I'm a 2nd semester Junior history major at Columbia, looking to write a thesis next year. I'd like to do as much research as possible this summer, while also bumming around with my boyfriend in Providence (where I would have access to Brown University's libraries). Is there any way to have someone else pay for it, ie, are there any fellowships or research grants I could apply for? Columbia offers two fellowships, but they're very competitive. Where else should I look? I've never applied for a grant, written a proposal, or really done anything in this vein before, so I'm not sure where to start. Any advice would be much appreciated. (Also, I'm not sure if it makes a difference what my topic would be, but I'm thinking about something on the Spanish Civil War and its influence on American intellectuals. Or possibly something relating to environmental history).

Help me find graduate fellowship programs in the US.

What are some good graduate fellowship programs for an electrical engineering student in the US? I am graduating with both a B.S. in electrical engineering and a B.S. in computer science in May. I know deadlines are coming up soon, but I would like to apply for a few different fellowships to go on to graduate school (starting Fall 2007). The ones I am already considering:

National Science Foundation
Hertz Foundation
National Physical Science Consortium
National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship

I am a white male with a strong academic background, so merit-based fellowships would be preferable. Also, I am looking for any other advise you care to share regarding these programs. Thanks in advance for your help!

What can I do to make a great Fulbright application?

I am applying for a U.S. Student Fulbright. Any recommendations for putting together a proposal? I'm nearly done with my MA and I'm applying for the fall 2007 Fulbright Program. I'm applying to Armenia with a proposal for building a participartory "Web 2.0" information site. The lack of transparency information sources has created a situation where gossip = truth. I believe that these gossip social networks could be utilized in the web to have a "truer truth." I set my proposal to professors at the American University of Armenia and they were really supportive. I've also had a lot of academics and technical people look at my proposal and the response has been very positive. (If anyone here wants to look at my proposal, I'd love the feedback.)

So, I have my draft proposal, I have people to work with in-country, so what can I do to make my application really shine? (I have experience living in Armenia already and sufficient language skills. I have a background in internet and media development in developing countries.) I'm not ethnically Armenian, so I think that this may work in my favour. I've also sent my proposal to my undergrad alma mater's Fulbright rep to look at.

What kinds of things do the admissions committee want to see in proposals? A detailed schedule? Lots of pro-American rah rah rah?
