Where should I go for the daily news?

What is a good newsfeed for daily American news at a national level? I read the BBC's newsfeed for general current events and international news. I read the Boston Globe's newsfeed for New England regional and American national news, but I'm not satisfied with it - it's good for local news, but there isn't enough national-scale content for my taste.

What is a good, relatively balanced/objective daily American news source that can be followed in a feedreader?

I'm looking for an American-focused equivalent of the BBC news site and its newsfeed- the day's headlines, some analysis, the source you'd check to quickly find out what was happening on a given day, but preferably leaning more towards serious issues and not so heavy on the wacky/offbeat/sensational (like whenever I visit cnn.com, it feels like no matter what huge crisis is going on, half of their Latest News headlines are things like "Chicago granny kickboxes mugger!").

Video podcasts are supposed to be easy for everyone

I'd like a Flash video player of my video podcast on the web site, and a high-quality (960x540 should work) video file in the podcast feed.

I'm currently using WordPress and PodPress to manage the feed and video. But I can see why some people who don't want to install QuickTime might not be able to see the show. PodPress currently makes me very happy with its stats reporting, but if I have to dump it in favor of something else, I will.

I have tried placing the video in the Revver (site currently down) Flash player and including the video file as a "feed only" option with PodPress, but for reasons I can't diagnose, that doesn't work in iTunes.

Ideas?

My best idea so far is just to include an obvious link in each post that redirects the user to a different site (YouTube or Revver or something) to watch the video, but that's not exactly user-friendly. What would be easiest for both me and the viewer?

Streamlining RSS/Web Browsing?

I'm looking to streamline my process of browsing RSS feeds and websites. The way I do it now ...

I am subscribed to feeds via Google Reader. I browse through them using the keyboard: 'k' for the next item if I'm uninterested and 'v' to open the item in a new tab if I'm interested. Then I go through the opened tabs. If I'm too backlogged to pay attention to them, I bookmark all open tabs via Firefox's "Bookmark All Tabs".

When I do go through the tabs, if it's a lengthy read I nonetheless want to pay attention to, I may file longer reads into a folder marked, appropriately enough, "Longer Reads"; otherwise, I take action on them if appropriate. If they represent something I need to do, I use a bookmarklet to shunt the URL into Remember the Milk as a task.

If it's something I want to blog, I usually post it to my del.icio.us account using the del.icio.us complete firefox extension. (del.icio.us then sends a daily post of what I've put in that day to my blog.) If something really cheeses me off or is something I think is really great, I open MarsEdit (a Mac OS X blogging application) and climb onto my soapbox.

Obviously, this is recreational and not obligatory, so it's not something I'm feeling under the gun about. I'm nonetheless wondering if it can be done more efficiently; if there are Firefox extensions, Greasemonkey scripts, cross-platform apps, or features I've not noticed or am ignoring that could be used to make the process described above even more streamlined and quick.

The one caveat is that I'm looking for a more universal accessibility. A Mac OS X application might be great, but wouldn't work on my Windows thumb drive. That's why above I suggested extensions, Greasemonkey userscripts, or features of these webapps I may have missed: they can be accessed using any OS.

Also, I do definitely understand that one way of streamlining would be to cut down the number of feeds I browse. Still, I'm at a number I like right now. I do periodically weed through and prune, though.

Also, how do you browse-and-blog?

Portal Systems

Got a request from a client. They want to create a portal that gets information from various news organizations on a specific subject. I'm looking for information on portal software that is compatible with news feeds and news feed information in general. They will want to pull full articles and perhaps other content from organizations (having obviously made arrangements) and categorize the information appropriately. Is it just a CMS with XML feeds basically? I've worked with CMSs before and understand many of the fundamentals of site development but have no experience pulling data in a portal fashion from other organizations.

Show me the Links!

Looking to parse an RSS feed and pull all the links out, and then turn links into a new feed. I've search around stumbled across magpie, simplepie and carp but not sure if those solutions will perform the actions I'm looking for. Does this seem like a custom script or has anyone heard of any parsers out there that will perform this action?

Thanks!!

Nintendo DS news into my Bloglines, please.

Searching through the tags, I don't think this has been asked before. I'm looking for feeds that I can slap into my Bloglines that will keep me updated on Nintendo DS releases and reviews. I don't have the time or commitment to go all around the various gaming sites on a week-by-week basis to keep abreast of all the new releases and/or new games that the DS'ers at large deem worthy of checking out. However, I'm interested in keeping an eye out for titles that I may (eventually) want to pick up.

Feeds need not be DS-exclusive (I can ignore other platform releases and reviews), but I'd like to be able to keep up on what's what regarding DS titles and the simplest way for me to do this is with my feedreader. Anyone have any suggestions?

Feedo is a No-Go.

Are there any worthwhile competitors to Feedo? I'm in the process of building A Thing and one of the features I'd like is a rolling series of headlines from a variety of RSS feeds related to a particular topic, formatted nicely. Feedo seems like it'd be perfect (small, fast, easy to configure with a nice selection of skins, and cheap) except for a simple problem: they can't straighten out their login system long enough for me to start an account, give them my money, and start using it. This, of course, fails to fill me with any sort of confidence.

So: spending up to $20 a month or so, what services out there offer something similar? (And don't say "Build it yourself." I'm aware of my technical shortcomings, thankyouverymuch.)

I use google reader as a feed reader. Recently some of my feeds seem to be getting doubled up.
Help Feed my Photo habit.

I'm looking for blogs that are focused on linking to good, interesting photos. The type of photo doesn't really matter. Photojournalism and fine art, landscapes, nature, street, wildlife, etc are all great (oversaturated stock photos that look like they belong on inspirational posters are not great). I'm not looking for blogs that feature the work of a single photographer. I am looking for blogs that express the POV of one person or a small group of people about what they find interesting. I know about Flickr's interestingness section and I like it. I'm looking for something different. I'd like 1) to be exposed to photos beyond the world of Flickr 2)for the choices to express individual preferences, rather than "the wisdom of the crowd."

How do I make Google Reader and Del.icio.us work together?

Can I "post" to Del.icio.us from Google Reader? Here is what I would like to do:

Each morning, I go through my feeds on Google Reader. I click "share" for items that I feel are important for others in my office to know about and then send an email with commentary about each story. I'd really like to actually leave commentary on the page itself with the links. I've noticed that you can do this in Del.icio.us (they call them "descriptions" I believe), so here's what I'm asking:

1> Can I add my own text/commentary to shared items on Google Reader? I didn't think so, but maybe I'm missing something.

2> Can I easily "export" any Google Reader shared items to Del.icio.us?

And no, I'm not looking to start a blog. I know a blog solves this problem, but for other reasons, it's a non-starter right now.

Can any of this be done?

Using WordPress for Multiple Same-Site Feeds

How can I use a single WordPress install to run multiple mini-blogs on one domain? I would like to use a single WordPress install - say at example.com/blog/ to generate multiple mini-blogs to be incorporated as .php includes in otherwise static pages throughout the site. Essentially, I'm looking to create little newsfeeds for internal use only - just headline, brief text, and a link.

I imagine the result would involve using category templates to generate .php files to be included in the other pages, but I'm not really sure how to go about it.

Has anyone done something similar?

I want to aggregate some RSS feeds for a group of not-tech-savvy people... ...and I like the single page apporach best, where a bunch of feeds are rendered on one page with pop-up article previews - you know, like Popurls or Original Signal. My question: are there any CC- or GNU-licensed templates to get the job done? I could write everything myself, but I'm lazy and I'd rather tweak than work from scratch. (Also, I know setting up RSS to Javascript or however you render the feeds needs to be set up on a server; no big deal.)

Where can I find cheap or free data feeds for movies in theatres and new DVD releases for use in a commercial website?

Where can I get free or low cost movie feeds / data sources for use in a commercial website? I'm looking for two things - a list of what is currently in theatres (or new in theatres this week) and new DVD releases, updated weekly if not more frequently. Many sites, like Yahoo, offer these sorts of feeds free for personal use only. I checked out IMDB but I'm about $15,000 short on yearly licensing fees and considering that I don't want the entire DB as IMDB offers but rather only two small data feeds, I thought there'd be something else available out there - and if there is, I can't find it. Any suggestions?

Skip bad feeds in Sage?

How can I get Sage to just skip bad feeds that won't load? In particular, Metafilter and Ask Metafilter. The RSS feeds on both Metafilter and Ask Metafilter always cause my Sage RSS program to get stuck. Those feeds will have trouble loading and the program will just hang there rather than skipping those feeds and moving down the list. As these are sites I like to visit throughout the day, I keep them listed at the top. While I realize that I can move them to the bottom so as not to run into this problem, it just seems like there would be another way around it.

1. How can I get Sage to just skip bad feeds that won't load? Is there some button or command that I am not aware of that will allow me to skip through the various feeds? Or a setting where I tell it to automatically skip feeds that won't load? It seems like sometimes it will do this on it's own, but other times it just gets stuck trying to load the bad feeds and it won't advance down the list.

2. Why are the MeFi and AskMefi feeds often having trouble loading? (Like right now, I can access the websites fine, but I cannot load the feeds). I have many other feeds collected, sometimes they will experience a burp or two every now and then, but it seems like these two feeds go down (sometimes for hours at a time) on a daily basis? Is it just their server or am I missing something?

Are there any particularly good RSS feeds for Latin American news? I'm looking for a site or service (newspaper, website, NPR, AP/Reuters, etc.) that specializes in news from and about various Latin American countries (rather than, say, a more general "world news" feed) with an RSS feed that I could add to an aggregator - something where there won't be the same story repeating twelve times from different news services. It should also be noted that I'm not looking for news from specifically one country or the other, but a feed that covers the whole region. Either English or Spanish (I could use the practice) language articles are fine with me. Thanks, everybody!

(Very) regular retrieval of XML feed

I have an XML feed which requires a username and password. I want to retrieve the contents every ten seconds or so (maybe thirty seconds at most) and store all the content that's retrieved. Is there a windows client out there that will do this? Or I just need to buckle down and code something....?

How can I delete defunct RSS feeds from my blog?

Removing defunct RSS feeds from blog? I checked my blog the other day and found that there are five RSS feeds coming out of it when I really only want two (one for posts and another for comments). I've gone through my entire template and there is no code for Feedburner in it at all yet I have a Feedburner feed on the blog. And there are two older feeds that haven't published in more than a year and are not in the template either.

How can I get rid of the extra feeds so that my readers don't sign up for the wrong one?

I can post the link to the blog if necessary but did not want to appear to be trolling for clickthroughs. My blog is linked in my profile, its hosted on my own space and uses Blogger as its engine.

I want a daily updated jokes rss feed!

I'm looking to keep in tune with the funny side of life and even improve my sense of humour.
Basically I find if I regularly read jokes I seem to enjoy life more and even start making ones up myself.
I like using rss to keep up with my favourite sites and I really love the idea of a website where people submit new jokes everyday and they are put into a feed which I can easily access.
Does anything like this exist?

Bloglines to Palm T|X

I'd like to be able to download unread articles from Bloglines to my Palm T|X via the Wifi - no PC sync involved. I have a Palm T|X, and a lot of feeds which I subscribe to. I can use QuickNews to download RSS feeds and take them with me, and I can surf Bloglines online (PC or Palm). However, I'm finding that I'll download and read things on my Palm, and then have to go through them in Bloglines, or vice versa. Is there a way to grab Bloglines on my Palm so I can read it offline?

(And huge kudos if there's a way to mark articles read offline as read when I connect)

edit javascript for FeedJumbler

Help editing javascript QueryString using FeedJumbler. I am trying to append the QueryString parameters (as suggested on this page), so that only 10 entries will show and with only the header.

I have no clue where to append this code. I've tried searching, but to no avail. Any help is appreciated!

My script is as follows:
script language="javascript" type="text/javascript" src="http://feedjumbler.com/users/mfshearer/b8c55373/javascript.js"></script

(I do have the opening and closing carrots in the appropriate places, but ask mefi was parsing my script.)

Blogs: Best syndication standard for a newsfeed?

Blog syndication: What standard (RSS, Atom, etc.) is best for syndicating full blog post contents? My blog has a simple RSS 0.91 feed with descriptions of blog entries. My system is hand-rolled - a PHP script rewrites the XML file with MySQL content for every new entry (I want to keep it this way and not use external feed services).

Now I want to publish the full contents of each entry to people's newsreaders, not just short descriptions. I'm stumped about what kind of feed to offer and what problems I might run into, though.

What standard should I use - RSS, Atom, both, other?
Are there any special character issues I should keep an eye out for? Can anyone recommend any resources online for more reading?

How can I subscribe to Daily Kos via Bloglines without seeing duplicate posts?

Bloglines always shows me duplicates of many Daily Kos posts (even though I have "Updated Items" set to "Ignore"). Is there a way that I can work around this, weed the duplicates out somehow? Perhaps using a middle-man of some kind? Is there a way I can subscribe to Daily Kos via Bloglines without seeing duplicate posts?

I use Bloglines, and I subscribe to the Daily Kos there. Problem is, Bloglines always shows me duplicates of Kos posts. As far as I can tell, I get duplicates of any post that gets updated at any point. If it is updated four times, I get it in my feed four times. So when I go to Bloglines in the morning, it might tell me that Kos has 18 new posts for me to view, when really there are only, say, 10 - but 4 of those are displayed 3 times each.

Now, you're probably thinking that I should go to "Edit Subscription" and change "Updated Items" to "Ignore". Alas, I did that a long time ago, and have double-checked it every so often just on the off-chance it was somehow changed back, but no, it is always set to "Ignore".

I emailed Bloglines, and they said:
We have discovered that if a post's text gets changed from RSS version 1 to RSS version 2 because of a typo or miswording or something of that nature, e.g.

RSS version 1

RSS version 2

This is one thing that will cause a duplicate posting. We have forwarded your information to the appropriate department for further investigation

Well, that's lovely, but that was some time ago, and I'm tired of the duplicates now.

So I'm wondering if anyone knows of or could think of any way around this. Like, could I subscribe to Daily Kos through some middle-man which would weed out the duplicates, and from there into Bloglines?

I suppose a lot of people might be inclined to just suggest another feed reader, and I'm not fully opposed to that, but I have tried quite a lot of them and so far I really prefer Bloglines -- so I'd really rather find a way to keep using Bloglines, just without those darn duplicates!
