Be there square?

"Later that day, Arthur Mgqweto, a math teacher, strode into the classroom, jauntily wearing a township take on the fedora called a square." A square? From a New York Times article, can somebody point me to a more complete description or better yet a picture of a (South African) square? This Arthur Mgqweto guy sounds like a cool cat.

Are dereferenced open streams implicitly closed?

Java filter: Are dereferenced InputStreams implicitly closed?

InputStream s;
s = new InputStream(filename1);

... // filename1 is read and used.

// Ok, I'm done with filename1, but I want to reuse s to open filename2

s = new InputStream(filename2);

Does calling a new instance of s implicitly call s.close() to close the filename1 stream before opening the new stream?

Or is filename1 stream just now dereferenced open stream?

I ask because I ran into the "too many files open" exception when I ran my program on Fedora. So, while I was in the process of cleaning up my code and making sure I closed all InputStreams, it dawned on me that reusing an InputStream variable without first explicitly calling close() might not close the old stream. Is this true?

Also, I'm aware that you can increase the # of open files limit in Linux, but I'd rather stick to good coding practices instead of a band-aid solution.

No reserved blocks in ext2 on Aspire One?

Why is it OK to have no reserved blocks in ext2 on the Acer Aspire One? This guide to recovering space on the Acer Aspire One gives as one suggestion:
By default the ext2 filesystems reserves 5% of all blocks for the superuser. You can safely set this to 0% and gain additional 325MB, or 375MB if you also remove the swap partition.
sudo tune2fs -m0 /dev/sda1

Now, I think I understand what reserved blocks are and why. Basically, it's because to avoid a situation where the free disk space drops close to zero, root doesn't have room in /var to do even the most basic things and the whole system starts falling apart. Please correct me if that's wrong or incomplete.

So why is it OK to unreserve these blocks on the Aspire One? Is there something about the way Linpus is set up that makes the above scenario impossible?

MadHatterFilter: Will I ever get to have a fedora without looking like a dork? I'm a hat guy, been such since a little tyke. I have a great Panama, a couple of Akubra's, a small mountain of ball caps, hiking hats, rain hats, you name it.

But no fedora. At least, not since I was six.

Now that I've crossed the 50 mark I'm starting to wonder if I can pull off the fedora without seeming like its an affectation? I'm not a kid in drama club trying to act all Brat Pack. I be all growed up now (on the outside).

So, what's the hive opinion? Are fedoras only for the dorks and great-grandpa's? Or can they be worn by a guy who loves hats?

Linux Filter: Calling out all Linux experts, searching for the best route to learn Linux!

Linux filter: Calling out all Linux experts. I need to learn administrative Linux in a rather short period. Looking for the best online resources, tutorials, cheat sheets, tips etc. I am a relative beginner as far as Linux goes. I have used the platform for various things, but never delved really deep into the command line control of it. With my new job, that is all about to change. I need to be very comfortable with the inner workings, understand most terminology and have an overall command of the CLI.

So I have done all the standard google searches, and have found quite a bit of quality resources. I am currently going through many of them, but I wanted to make sure that I have access to the absolute best material and find out if there is anything I am missing.

I am looking for online tutorials, video/audio tutorials, free sites, pay sites anything. I just want to maximize my learning process as I have a really short time period to truly understand everything. Think of me as a complete noob, as I want to go over even the basics just to make sure I fully comprehend everything.

As of right now, I have Fedora 9 on a bootable USB that I use as a personal testing ground. Plus beginning mid-week, I will have access to the Red Hat Enterprise testbed that I really need to have down pat.

Not sure if I'm giving enough information, so please ask away if I omitted anything.

Thanks to all that even bothered to read this!

Would anyone care to comment on the most practical way, given access to a command line Fedora box, I can obtain a copy of a folder and its contents? The box is connected to the net but I don't know enough Unix to, for example, get a tar of the folder and have the machine email me a copy. Although thinking about it, the folder is probably just a little too big for that. I have SSH and physical access but FTP isn't working, which is the whole problem in a nutshell, really. If anyone is interested in 10 minutes' brainstorming feel free to mefi mail me!

Live USB boot problems

I'm trying to put a bootable, persistent Linux install on my USB drive, but it won't boot! I am running a dual boot of Ubuntu 8.04 and Win XP SP3, on an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600.

I have tried using the LiveUSB-Creator tool for Fedora with these disk images:
Fedora 9 i686 Live KDE
Fedora 9 x86_64 Live KDE.

I have also tried using UNetbootin with the same Fedora ISOs.

I have set my BIOS to boot from the USB drive (which is an OCZ Rally2 btw) but everytime I try to boot from it, it simply says 'Boot error', and nothing else. I have checked and the first partition on the drive is set to bootable.

Help!

Thanks

I want to get my father a hat for his 70th birthday. No, I don't mean one of those awful narrow-brimmed glen plaid affairs that are about as stylish and becoming as toe rubbers. I’m thinking a wide-brimmed fedora made of a good quality gray felt – something like this, and like what "Jack McCoy" sometimes wears on Law & Order (unfortunately can’t find a picture of Sam Waterston in his fedora). I’ve looked in the malls in Toronto and the only suitable hat I could find was $85 plus tax, which is both rather steep for my gift budget and too much to spend on something I am not convinced my mother and I can coax my dad into wearing;-). Does anyone know where (preferably) in Toronto or (plan B) online I can find a less expensive hat (hopefully not over $50) for Dad Swan?

Avoiding duplicate frames while encoding VCR output using MEncoder

Using MEncoder on Fedora 7 Linux and a bt878 TV card, how do I avoid or work around duplicate frames when encoding video from a VHS tape? I have a 1Ghz system with 1GB of RAM running Fedora 7 Linux as its OS. It has a bt878 chipset TV tuner card with RCA video in. I've downloaded and installed MPlayer and MEncoder using yum and the Livna 3rd-party repository. I have a VCR, and it's video out goes in the video in of my TV tuner card.

When I try to run MEncoder to encode the video output of my VCR, it generally works fine. However, with some tapes, I will get many duplicate frame warnings. When I play back the resulted video file, I obtain many ghost or looping images from frames preceding the current one being played. The audio stays fine.

This happens with some tapes. With others, I will get very few or no duplicate frames at all. When I view those tapes live on my computer using my TV card and a program like TVTime or xawtv, or using a real TV, everything looks fine. The VCR system I have is quite recent, as it was bought brand new just around four years ago and has good picture quality and its auto-tracking feature is great. (WIth some old tapes that I have, this is really handy.)

The command I tried initially is the following:

mencoder \
-tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video0:input=1:normid=1:width=640:height=480 \
-ovc lavc -ofps 29.97 -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=1800:vhq:v4mv \
-oac mp3lame -vf harddup

For the -lavcopts, I've tried several options, including different codecs and framerates. I also tried to use the "harddup" option, but it has no effect. I also tried resolutions like 720x576 and 320x240, but this also doesn't help.

Also, I'm at my parents' home and keep in mind that they only have dial-up. If I really have to, I'm willing to download more software. If I really can't complete the transfer of my tapes by Saturday, I may just bring those tapes back with me, buy a USB TV tuner for my Mac mini, and transfer the tapes there instead.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Where's the Source?

I am a Linux newbie. I just installed Fedora Core 5 and I'm looking for the source. I've been told the source code to the OS always comes with Linux. During the part of the install where you get to choose what gets installed and what doesn't, I opted to install everything. Yet, I cannot seem to find the kernel source code anywhere. Can someone tell me where it's supposed to be or how I can find it? Apologies for the beginner question.

A dedicated Fedora Plesk server has been set up for me at a hosting company, and as a site admin I'm not sure what to do next. Is there a good guide or tutorial anywhere that will get me up to speed on preparing a dedicated server for a website that uses PHP and mysql? Will I have to install Apache?
Wireless 802.1x with Fedora Core 5?

Trying to get a wireless 802.1x connection working in a more-or-less vanilla Fedora Core 5 installation and not making much progress... The Dell Latitude D600 in question has a IPW2100 wireless chip in it.

In trying to get working wireless, I have installed the driver and firmware for it via Intel's IPW2100 site.

I have also installed a Windows driver from Dell's support site via ndiswrapper.

In the case of using the IPW2100 driver, I get a
eth1
device via
dmesg
:

ieee80211_crypt: registered algorithm 'NULL'
ieee80211: 802.11 data/management/control stack, git-1.1.7
ieee80211: Copyright (C) 2004-2005 Intel Corporation <jketreno @linux.intel.com>
ipw2100: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2100 Network Driver, git-1.2.2
ipw2100: Copyright(c) 2003-2006 Intel Corporation
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:02:03.0[A] -> Link [LNKB] -> GSI 5 (level, low) -> IRQ 5
ipw2100: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 Network Connection</jketreno>

Likewise, with ndiswrapper I have no problems loading the Windows IPW2100 driver set.

In both cases I can see
eth1
as a device in
ifconfig
.

I am trying to use
wpa_supplicant
to connect to a 802.1x wireless network. My conf file is as follows:

ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
ctrl_interface_group=0
eapol_version=2
Still, no love.

Status information from
wpa_cli
is not very helpful:

wpa_state=SCANNING

The same APs (Cisco Aironet 1100s) work with Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4 clients, as well as Windows XP SP 2 clients with an installed 802.1x supplicant.

Any thoughts why this might not be working? Thanks!

IT Experts and Linux Fans - I need your advice cutting through the clutter. Can you please recommend the best linux distros for Beginner, Intermediate and Expert users? There are so many options out there and most people only skim the surface. Personally my choice for newbies is Ubuntu and Suse for pros, but that barely scratches the surface and I have no clue if there is anything that suits everyone else inbetween. Also , I need advice on whether KDE or GNOME is the best bet. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated geared towards a formulating a best choice for beginners, intermediates and experts.

Apache/Linux permissions issue

How do I set permissions on a Fedora Core 5 system so that two different users can create, edit, and delete files in the web root (/var/www/html), yet all files retain the ownership of apache:apache? I would settle for just username:apache, as long as the users can still edit each other's files.

I have already added the users to the apache group in /etc/group

They can currently edit any files owned by apache:apache, and can create new files, but the new files are assigned an ownership of username:username by default. This means they have to manually chown their files if they want the other person to be able to edit them.

I hope I am explaining this well enough...

I don't want to pay for bloody TiVo!

I know about MythTV and Freevo. My question to the hive mind is I have a useless whitebox PC with a 2400 "PR Rating" Athlon processor, a gigabyte of RAM, and a 200 gigabyte hard drive. I'm comfortable with Debian and a bit less so with Fedora. I'm willing to buy whatever expansion card it is I need to hook the computer up to my tv/cable.

I don't ask a whole lot, just that I can set it up to record shows so I can skip commercials and cut my TV time by a third. Is my best move to buy a TiVo already, or can I jigger up something with no monthly fees by using this useless spare PC of mine, a distro like Debian/Ubuntu or Fedora, and a minor investment (under the price of a TiVo box) in an expansion card? Are this PC's specs underpowered for the task or will it suffice for my purpose?

I really want a TiVo, but man, I hate to add yet another damn monthly bill to all my other monthly bills. I don't even really need the whole TV listings business, I don't care. I don't need my PVR to suggest shows to me; I already know what I like and want to watch. I know when the things I want to watch are on (mostly
[adult swim]
and the Simpsons and South Park, plus some stuff from the Annenberg/CPB channel, History Channel, and Animal Planet).

Bonus points for anyone who can suggest a way of having a remote control for the whitebox PC contraption. I would not mind paying a hundred bucks extra for a remote and receiver to install into the PC so I can control the Freevo/MythTV from across the room, although if consumer-level hardware for this doesn't exist, then I guess it doesn't exist.

All advice, comments, persuasion and dissuasion welcomed. If the answer is "get a fucking TiVo already and shut up", I can accept that. But if there's a way to get a reasonably tolerable experience with open source software, my currently useless extra PC, and maybe a few hardware upgrades, I'd be delighted to put a little elbow grease and IRC begging-for-help-time into the effort.

Help Me Fight Crime With The Proper Hat

Hat/Costumefilter - Help me find this hat! I'm working on a costume for Halloween already, but I'm having a devil of a time finding the proper hat I've decided to go as The Shadow, pulp crime fighter and that guy who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men.
In the pulp, it's called a slouch hat, but the slouch hats I've found here and here really don't seem to match up with the hat worn by Alec Baldwin in the movie version, seen here, here, and big picture here.
It almost looks like a fedora, but the brim looks to be larger than the standard fedora. Looks almost like a zoot suit hat, too. Snooping around eBay comes up with things like this.
Any costumers got any suggestions out there? What the heck did they use in the movie and where can I find one of those suckers?
I promise to use my newfound hypnotic powers for good and not for evil.

Parts to build a cheap(ish) Linux Desktop PC?

Looking for the component suggestions on what is the "sweet spot" as far as price/performance to build a cheap-ish desktop Linux PC.

I've already got a great monitor and a KVM switch, just need to build the box. I'd like to keep the cost in the $500 range.

I'm currently taking courses for a RedHat Linux certification. I've got an old Thinkpad with Fedora Core installed on it to play with for the meantime. However it's really limited on disk space (9GB) and it's a bit pokey when using the GUI.

So I want to build a desktop (actually, it will go inside a cheap 4U 19" rackmount case I've got laying around) for linux playing. It's going to get Fedora Core also but I think eventually I'll move to SUSE when I finish the certification.

Although I've built many PC's it's been about 2 years since the last one and I haven't kept up with what's current in hardware. I've also never built one specifically for a linux installation.

I'm very concerned about getting hardware that has driver support in the currently released kernel. I do not want to be chasing down linux hardware drivers.

Checklist for what I'd like the desktop to have:

- Nvidia Video Card with VGA *AND* DVI output - I want to play with XGL.

- Ability to have multiple non-SCSI HDD's. I understand SATA is now prevalent instead of EIDIE - how many drives can you install per SATA controller?

- Gigabit ethernet.

- USB (I'm sure this is integrated on any recent motherboard)

So, after all that, I'm looking for a recommendation for:

Motherboard
Processor
Hard Drive(s)
Memory
Video Card
Power Supply

and any interface cards needed for features not integrated into motherboard (gigabit ethernet, for instance).

Cross platform games for girls

FamilyEntertainmentFilter: I have three pc's, two run windows (one dual-boots XP and Blag linux) and the third is an old PII that runs Fedora. I also have three daughters who all like being on the computer at the same time.

Can you recommend any cool apps or games they might have fun with and would run on both a wussy Linux box and Windows (either natively, via emulation or online)?

Using disseminators in the Fedora Digital Repository Management System (not the Redhat core)

I have question about using disseminators in the Fedora Digital Repository Management System (not the Redhat core) . [MI] I understand how to create and use disseminators but I don't understand what the disseminators actually do. I'm trying to create a datastream that will transform an xml document into an rss document via an xsl. So...I add the disseminator but where can I actually see the disseminator actually change the information?
