What would happen if the US cut student tuition reimbursement?

I've recently been on a kick reading about the current problems in higher education – tuition rising while state funding to universities decreases, large student debt, enrollments down, increased use of contingent faculty to control costs, increased spending on amenities, etc. What would happen if the federal subsidies were suddenly removed? Do I actually have a job?

Someone please share some experience so I can stop worrying and get some sleep. I received a tentative offer from a federal agency. I then received an email asking for my preferred start date so they can send a confirmation letter. I responded, haven't heard back for a month. I sent an email to check in but haven't heard back for a week. [more inside]

Will it hurt me down the line to give myself a "demotion"?

I am a U.S. Federal employee. I live in DC. After a decade here, I'm feeling pretty much done. I'd like to move to CA to be closer to loved ones, and a friend in SF just alerted me to a good-fit job opening in my agency's field office there. Problem: it's one grade lower than my current position. [more inside]

What agency in Portland has a shield logo on their police cars?

Lately I've been noticing an increase in police vehicles in my neighborhood in Portland, Oregon. There is one in particular I see a lot but never get close enough to to read that has a shield with--I want to say--a blue, gold, and some green picture inside. It looks like there are some trees in it, maybe a river. Last night I saw one that said "Field Operations" on the back parked across the street. What agency has this car? [more inside]

Is the Peace Corps considering domestic (US) assignments?

I've heard a couple of times now that the Peace Corps may start developing programs/sending volunteers to hard-hit places in the US, that are the functional equivalent of third-world countries. There's (unsurprisingly) nothing of the sort on their website, but I think it's a great idea, if it could be done in a way that did not offend the pride of the state in question. Does anyone have information as to whether this is an actual proposal?

Which Government Agency Provided Money for Bank Bailouts?

It's an alphabet soup that doesn't allow for even a relatively straight line between money and banks. The Treasury ultimately provided the money, the Office of Thrift Supervision was supposed to oversee the money, the Federal Deposit Insurance Commission closed banks that didn't qualify for the bailout. But who wrote the check and was ultimately responsible for those banks until they paid the bailout money back?

Making the Most of a Full-time MPP Program

I recently accepted an offer for a spot in a full time MPP program from a very decent, non-Ivy school. My funding (per an assistantship or researcher position) reduces the total tuition to approximately $3000, and the program provides an allowance for an unpaid or poorly paid summer internship. I have enough money saved to avoid going into debt if I work part time. I want to offset the opportunity costs of two years outside of work by making myself as employable as possible. [more inside]

Career ladder positions in the Federal system.

I am in a career ladder position in the Federal government. I'm approaching the end of my first year on the job. I have heard from colleagues/friends in government, that going up to the next GS-level in the ladder is almost automatic (requires sign-off from supervisor). Is this true? How do I request this increase from my supervisor? Also, can you help me find documents online which show that one is eligible to go up a grade after one year? [more inside]
