List Bookmarks to Geocities Domain

Quick! Geocities closes shop tomorrow! Is there an efficient way to search my favorites/bookmarks for geocities pages that might be in there? So I can steal the content before it goes bye bye? Content is king -- I'd rather save a page to my hard drive than lose the content altogether.

Must See Movies

What were the movies that made you go WOW? I recently got a DVD player (yes, I finally joined the 21st century) and it's time to catch up on what I've been missing. Please help me find classic films, cerebral plot-twisters, mystery and science fiction, light-hearted romance and comedy... basically anything that when you walked out of the theater or saw them on TV, you said to yourself, "WOW!, I want to see that again!"

Favicons not showing up

How can I get Internet Explorer to show favicons? I have over 1000 favorites and use FavIconizer to download and save favicons. Besides looking pretty they help to distinguish bookmarks. I recently upgraded to IE 8 beta, and although I don't know if that is the cause, I now don't have any favicons. I have tried FavIconizer, FavOrg, AM-Deadlink and Icon Restorer and none of them work. The icons download but Explorer is either not looking in the right place or there's a bug or maybe it's a registry/folder setting somewhere because no icons show up. It's driving me nuts! If the sites are resaved then the favicons are added but obviously that would take way too long. Any help? (I don't use Firefox).

What goodies do we need from Phoenix, AZ? Husband is going there for a few days in July, and we're trying to think of what treats he ought to bring back to New England - stuff we can't find here at home. Cactus Cooler soda and prickly pear jelly/candy are all I can think of. See's Candies would be wonderful, but would not travel well. Any other regional favorites? Thanks in advance!

How can I create or add a group of Favorites in Internet Explorer?

How can I turn a long list of hyperlinks into either a list of filenames in Windows Explorer or a list of Favorites in Internet Explorer? Say I have 1,000 hyperlinks in a list so it is 1,000 entries long (could be in an Excel file, a Word file, or on a web page). I want to have these 1,000 hyperlinks as Favorites, which seems to be the same as converting them from the content of one file to the file names of 1,000 files. I can manually save each hyperlink as the name of a file, but if there are 1,000, and if they need to be updated every week, that would be a killer. I need an automated solution.

My Documents files in Internet Explorer favorites

How do I keep the contents of the My Documents folder from showing up in Internet Explorer favorites? Most of my coworkers use Internet Explorer 7 on Windows XP, and today one of them told me that when she clicks on Favorites in IE, every file from her My Documents folder is displayed there. At first I thought she'd accidentally copied and pasted a bunch of shortcuts somehow. But then I had her make a new Word doc and save it to My Documents as Fake.doc, and sure enough, it showed up in the IE favorites right away.

I looked through her IE settings, but I didn't find anything related to My Documents. Then I opened the My Documents folder and checked the settings in Folder Options just in case, but I didn't see anything there, either. Is this some kind of Internet Explorer/Windows Explorer conflation?

I suppose I could have her remove Fake.doc from her IE favorites and see if the document itself is deleted from My Documents. But even if the document isn't deleted and she's safe to remove all those documents from her favorites, I'd still like to know how it happened.

Firefox Favorites

Is there an XP tweak to have the "special" Favorites folder recognize my Firefox favorites instead of the (empty) IE favorites? I switched from FF to IE a long time ago and moved all my bookmarks as well. But I used to like having my "Favorites" in the Start Menu; that way I could go right to a bookmark without having to open the browser, etc. Any ideas?

fixing Firefox file/folder flexibility

Is there a way to open multiple favorites in Firefox from the Windows XP file Explorer window?
When I try to open a group of urls from the Windows Explorer window, my right click choices are either IE or Maxthon (an IE shell program). I'd like to open multiple favorites in Firefox, but that choice is not available, at least as an Explorer context menu choice, even if I make Firefox the default browser.

Of course Firefox can open one url or a full folder of urls within the browser, but I want to be able to open just a small group that I select from folders anywhere on the hard drive. PlainOldFavorites, the Firefox add-on is excellent, but doesn't work for this purpose. Suggestions?

PC filter: Why did a gold star labeled "Favorites" appear on the desktop of my new laptop? I may have inadvertently dragged it there when I was trying to set up Outlook. If I try to delete it from the desktop, I get a message that it can't be deleted because it's a system file. Am I stuck with it on the desktop, or can I put it back where it belongs?

ie7 bookmarking hell

is there really no way to have ie7 save cached local copies of pages that you bookmark in the favorites folder? (without saving the page separately as an mht file in a different folder outside the favorites folder, that is). In ie6, when bookmarked a website to your favorites folder, you had the option of saving a local cached copy of the webpage. That way if the site went away, you'd still have your local copy.
IE7 seems to have eliminated that option to save a local cached copy.
And whats more, despite a fair amount of googling, I have not been able to find a third party add-in or plug-in or third party 'bookmark manager' type software that actually allows local cached copies.
Isnt that incredible? Is it just me, or is this one of the most basic things that people who save lots of bookmarks would like to do?
I know a handful of online bookmark services (like furl) offer cached copies, but they are deficient in other things (like folders - furl does not allow unlimited nested folders). Spurl claims to offer both but cached copies there dont work and its going out of business it looks like.

So - any ideas out there for a bookmark manager (online or offline) that offers local cached copies as well as unlimited nested folders? Thanks!

Please give me back my titles!

Why when I add a bookmark now in Firefox 2.0 does it add it with no title? Let me try to state it more clearly. Since I've updated to Firefox 2.0 whenever I add a favorite, despite having a title, it will add it with no title. You click add, the box comes up with the automatic title, click add and it seems like nothing happens. Click cancel and look in favorites, there's a bookmark with no title. It will get you back to the website when you click on it (so the actual link is working) but it's not registering the titles anymore. You have to go name them manually.

Help help plz? TIA, you Firefox gurus and apologies if this is as easy as fix as I'm afraid it will be.

Online bookmarks

Is there an easy, transparent way to store your bookmarks online? I've just recently began using my dual-booted Linux more often, and I'm getting increasingly frustrated by having two sets of Firefox bookmarks.

I have used del.icio.us in the past, and it's nice to play with. However, it's not usable enough for me to replace the 'old-fashioned' bookmarks. I do not want to log into a webpage, and add links via web forms, and I don't particularly care about other people's links most of the time. Furthermore, plain old folders are usually enough for me, and I don't really require tags.

Really, I want something not too far from the current Firefox system. The perfect extension would do something like this: ask me to log in once (but puhleaaze store my credentials for future use), populate my Bookmarks folder, store any new bookmarks I might add. Does something like this exist?

What's the best online bookmark managing tool?

What's the best online bookmark managing tool?

Importance placed on being able to access them from any computer and an interface/usability similar to bookmarks native in firefox? I like how Firefox manages my bookmarks. It's quick, always there, easy to search, can be added to in a flash, and sits in the sidebar always in the order that I added them and am used to using them.

However, I'm tired of only having access to those links while sitting at home. What I'm looking for is an online bookmark manager that
- will sit in my Firefox sidebar,
- look/act just like the native bookmarks on my own computer,
- is easy and extremely quick/painless to add a bookmark to (and remove one if i want)
- is accessible from public terminals (and not only through Firefox)

less, but still important
- doesn't require me to log-in for each use
- has the option of keeping bookmarks private (yes, I realize these two clash a bit)

I've tried del.icio.us, and I like it, but I can't find a Firefox extension I like/that works the way I want to bring del.icio.us to my sidebar. I've tried pluck, but it reordered by bookmarks when I uploaded them and does not make it super smooth to add a new bookmark. I've tried Yahoo! My Bookmarks, but it is way to cumbersome to manage them (reorder, delete, etc). I've looked at the Firefox extension Foxmarks, but it doesn't appear to let me view my bookmarks from IE, or a public terminal.

So which service do you suggest, and why? Or, are my priorities wrong, do they emphasize the wrong things, and should I change what I expect from my bookmarks?

...what's next?

How to Sync favorites btwn browsers and computers

How to sync favourites or bookmarks between different computers and different browsers? I have a work PC, a home PC and a USB Drive. I just want to be able to access the same bookmarks wherever I am and keep them automatically updated. Any ideas? Both PCs run windows (2000 and XP), and the USB Drive is a Sandisk Titanium Cruzer. This is a 2 part question:
1) Firstly, on my work PC, i run both IE and Firefox (I keep IE for when I have to look at our intranet site). These are the first set of bookmarks to sync. Is there a way just to keep a master bookmark list that both browsers access?
2) Assuming (1) is possible, how do I then have this master bookmarks list copied to by USB drive, so it can then be automatically synched when I get home?

Please help! Should I think about using del.icio.us?

Multiple PCs

I use a whole bunch of PC's - three mainly, my laptop at work, and a desktop and laptop at home...I'd like to find a way of keeping my favorites synchronised on all three OR keeping them all in one place on the web and being able to access them...oh, and I'd like the solution to be 'free' and look cool...(is there an easy way to harvest the 500 favorites on my work laptop - and turn them into a web page?)

I use IE6 on all of my PC's....but some web based solution would allow me to access all my links from other machines/browsers.

How to store and browse my bookmarks?

Anyone have any suggestions for a quick and versatile way to bookmarks/favorites in a multi-faceted, customizable database? I've got hundreds upon hundreds of bookmarks of "Nice Websites" that I use for inspiration and ideas, but they've grown to the point that I can no longer maintain them with just the browser. I want to be able to browse by color, style, layout, etc. Any suggestions?

Recommend some bands and albums

Each boxing week I take advantage of record store sales and buy a heap of music. What's one album (doesn't matter when it came out) that you think I should buy and one band you think I should investigate? The recommended album doesn't have to be by the recommended band. [more inside] I know that MeFi music threads often get out of hand so I'm asking if we can all play nice and not get into arguments and "your band sucks" debates. Please just list one of each (though "I second such and such's recommendation" may be helpful in the end)--pretend you could magically make one album appear under my Christmas tree. What would it be? (I like all genres. Yes, even country!)

Looking for remote bookmark management across several PCs

Now that I have a Real Job, I'm stuck working between two home computers and two work computers, all Windows systems. Bookmark management has become a nightmare. I'm looking for some sort of remote management system where I can combine all my bookmarks and manage them in my webspace, so I can access them from anywhere. I'm up to about 1500 categorized bookmarks, so a mostly automated system would obviously be preferential. Any ideas?
